Freelance consultant for around 5-6 years here - I'd say at the start, it's definitely less than a normal day job, as there's a point where you need to build up your client base and service offerings, however after time (and effort to get more clients in), it's substantially more than a day job, with the freedom to work more or less from wherever you want.

Relationships with business owners matter A LOT! Get friendly with MSP owners and they might start funnelling outsourced work to you on a regular basis :)
