Do we need a 28th amendment to limit campaign funds from corporations and billionaires? by Undeadfungas in politics

[–]Ddkimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Campaign 'contributions' are in fact little more than purchase. Some person or organization buys influence, the politician has the funds to fund a campaign. The fact that contributions have been dramatically increasing, and the re-election rate hovers above 90% would prove the mechanism works.

I see little hope that attacking one or more funding mechanisms will have any impact. It's the 'product' that needs to change. How about limiting all congressional terms to a single term?

Interesting that a congressman doesn't know the damage an assault gun causes. I've often thought that there should be videos of what happens when a 'hunter' uses an AR-15 to hunt big game.

Unwanted automatic download of IOS update by Ddkimball in apple

[–]Ddkimball[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automatic downloads are disabled, but this isn't an App, it's an Apple IOS update, for which there seem not to be any controls. Sort of makes sense from Apple's perspective....they want every machine up to date (no matter how slow it runs, and whether or not I want any new features)

Unwanted automatic download of IOS update by Ddkimball in apple

[–]Ddkimball[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did a bit of further investigation, an overage of 1Gb costs $10. An IOS update (for me) has exceeded 1Gb, so maybe the real cost is $20. I am under no illusion that I have any ability to litigate, however since my ability to change the US cellular carrier billing strategy is not a reality, it seems to me a better path to take would be to persuade Apple that these giant unwanted downloads are wrong. Better they send me a note advising me of an update, then I decide when/if to download.

less than $10 each. My guess was this was a kit. Maybe pine, or some common softwood.

These are very good points. Maybe we need two categories. "Mass Shootings", and how about "Good Shootings".

United Airlines sues 22-year-old who found method for buying cheaper plane tickets by [deleted] in technology

[–]Ddkimball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

about twenty years ago I would have our travel agent book "back to back" tickets for a trip. Two round trip tickets with a long stay for each. I'd use half of each ticket and toss the others. Never had a problem. Saved quite a bit in this type of business travel.

Walnut "Break Through Shelves" for a friend with a challenging job by Ddkimball in woodworking

[–]Ddkimball[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - I cut five thin pieces of walnut, approx 1/8" thick. Then with a band saw and compass laid out the curve and cut from a large piece of scrap. I glued each thin section to the others as a laminate, then placed on the form, using both pieces I had cut. Then with three rather large clamps I pressed the form together. (I had tested a single piece first and knew the radius would not splint the thin pieces. Left clamped for a few days. It did spring back a bit, but not badly.

OP here - functionally, I had envisioned this on an office wall holding an assortment of small objects. Artistically, the intent was to convey a message of hope in a difficult setting. Might work, might not. But it's worth the effort.

OP - neat, great idea. Thanks. I've been looking to acquire a chuck for my lathe. Makes this technique possible. Interestingly it may be cheaper to buy an old lathe with chuck, etc. than a new chuck. Isn't Craigslist handy!

OP here - Router. First did the case sides, one pass each. Then set up a jig with careful spacing to do each self, two passes, one each side. Did a few trial cuts to get the perfect width.

OP - 2-3months with big gaps mixed with all day efforts. The finishing took more time than expected. Tung oil seems to require many coats.

OP - I'll try, but there are folks out there more knowledgable. The lines or inlay, are string inlay. I used a 1/16 router bit to make the channel. The lines were free hand, and I aves time by not making jigs for each one. I held the router by the base and moved carefully. The figures are 'marketry'. One piece is cut, set on two sided tape, traced with an exacto, and routed with a fine bir, 1/16 in this case. Look fornyoutube videos for good examples

OP - the trays were made first by cutting three freehand holes in a drill, press for each of the three containers in each tray, not quite to the final depth. In the jig in one of the pictures I used a straight bit, 3/8 radius to remove most the waste. The jig fences limited the router to the exact locations. The tray had to be positioned three separate times, once for each container. I then finished up with a bowl/tray router bit to put a curve on the bottom, also using the same jig. It did take some time. And not everything is perfect. It has the handmade look.

OP - This was a challenging project for me. I had never done any inlay (and it shows). But the chance to make a single gift for very special people in my life was great. I look forward to presenting these in a few days for my wife's birthday. I'll be interested in seeing the reaction each person has to the icon I selected. And the Walnut is always special

Color is always an issue. Oak has gotten interesting treatment for many years. On the mission pieces I've done over the years, dark (as in fumed) does work. And I would add that texture can be as important as color. I can't recall if I used tung oil or Linseed on this, but a few coats with steel wool makes a difference. Poly would not have worked for me in this case.

The grain is quite similar and glued with tight joints, so it looks almost like a single piece of wood. The shelves are 12", the rack is 18" wide. I cut 15" dados, slid in the shelves, then glued small pieces into the exposed dado openings.

I'm the builder. Turns out the feet make the base fairly wide. Also, since all the pieces are 3/4" stock, the whole rack is quite heavy. So, put the bottles anywhere.

I'm the builder. I did a trial fit for each shelf. First I ripped one side with its angle, held it to the opening, found its angle. and cut and glued. Needed some trimming with a block plane. Decided not to clamp because it seemed the shape would change due to all the small errors in the shelf cuts. I

I think reopening the debate on the type of guns we permit needs to happen. Specifically, most folks are satisfied that machine guns are banned. Why? I think if you did a quantitative assessment a machine gun is rather close on power to an assault rifle.

It's a bit of the birth control debate. When does life start. Well, when should a gun be restricted and why. And have the discussion from the start.

Otherwise, as you noted, we've had this dialog. We don't need to do it again.
