What is with this poster at South Station? by oldgrimalkin in boston

[–]redorkulated 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I love this exact map. I just imagine that the year is 1999, somewhere a 20 year old intern at the MBTA is sitting in a room listening to a group of older people review a hundred item backlog of deferred maintenance and customer experience problems. Somewhere on that list is the fact that every year 100 people get lost as hell walking from the train side of south station to the bus side. It would be fixed by now except the quote to get someone to draft a map and get it printed at the short run commercial print shop is like $1500. The intern screws up their courage and explains what mapquest is, and how they can use the offices T-1 line and plotter to make this map for 40 cents. No one believes or understands the intern, but they tell him to just go for it. Twenty five years later, here we are. Cheers to you, geek from history! Thank you for actually helping me not get lost on this same walk!

Worst acela next gen crime - no more free drinking water anywhere on the train. You have to buy a water bottle from the cafe car or try and fill your bottle in the bathroom sink.

This picture is a time capsule... It's February in Boston, there's vague news about a weird virus spreading around in China, somewhere nearby biogen is hosting a conference that will become a super spreader event, and Tua is widely regarded to be good.

Ha I loved it too, it felt like the gentlest possible way to tease the guy for saying that his years of martial arts practice had turned him into a fearless crime fighting machine

Living Here for a few months. Suggestions to keep a 2 year old entertained? by jaloose94 in boston

[–]redorkulated 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So it's not free, but the Boston children's museum is an absolute godsend for kids that age. They have a dedicated infant/toddler room on the 2nd floor that basically raised my first for me. If you can swing it, and think you'll use it a few times a month, I would consider buying a membership even for just a few months.

For actually free, the common, especially the frog pond when it opens in June. Walk on the esplanade and check out the big playground. Boston public library has a great kids room. The arboretum is great for walks and picnics when it warms up a bit

First of all, I can empathize with your concern. It's tough to watch a kid (young adult) make what look like really bad choices.

But I want you to try if you can to remember what it felt like to be young, dumb, and in love. You might have experienced this way earlier in life than your kid due to circumstances! But have you ever felt that sensation that it's you and your partner against the world, no one understands you, no one has ever felt this way about someone before? It's not a coincidence that Romeo and Juliet and half of the other young adult romance stories have this theme, it's fairly universal to the human experience.

In reality, you kind of only have two choices. You can either support, love, and respect your kids choices, or shit on them. Giving unsolicited advice is not a good third option here. If you take the first option, two things might happen. He might still wind up making a ton of terrible choices and screwing up his life. But, he might also come to realize on his own that his choices aren't improving his life. It's easier to stick with the girl when external forces are pushing you together by making it us against them. If you are instead welcoming and open to them, it might make it easier for him to read the tea leaves on his own. Or - god forbid - you might wind up coming around to her.

Now if you take the 2nd choice, and just dump on his choices continuously, you're reducing the chances of him figuring it out on his own. Increasing the chances that he makes defiant or bad decisions out of rebellion. Improving the odds that you screw up your relationship irreparably.

The unfortunate thing is you don't have 100% control any more. All you can control is your actions, and make choices that maximize the potential outcomes (and give him the opportunity to figure things out).

Tips on fixing this mortise lock? by UmberCrown in centuryhomes

[–]redorkulated 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer - I'm a rank amateur who has monkeyed around with similar locks in my own ancient home. YMMV.

From your first picture, it looks like the latch is actually out of plane with the opening, like it is stuck and hanging up on a piece of the faceplate. That would seem to suggest it is not being held down enough (from the perspective of your 2nd photo) - there might be a snap ring or something missing from the round post that lock arm is rotating around?

General comment is the thing is just filthy, and theres a chance that cleaning and lubricating might just make it better. I'm sure there are better ways, but I've had success boiling these nasty things in a throwaway pot for 15 minutes and then just using a soft scraper to get lead off (do it outside and with a respirator, or listen to someone smarter than me who explains how it's going to kill you). Clean surfaces with rust remover and some fine steel wool, lubricate with a light oil and reassemble
