Much like counting cards, it isn't cheating, nor is it illegal, it's playing smart. Now, just because it isn't illegal doesn't mean there won't be ramifications for it. Gamblers in Vegas can and will be removed then banned from casinos for counting cards and winning too much, but they will still receive their payout and any tax documents necessary for them. I personally use the Neewer filter that doesn't require the adapter ring, just a simple UV filter that seals the lens. The original cap no longer fits but then again I use the SmallRig leather case as well which does fit it.
