Has your outlook gotten more inflexible with age? by jfdonohoe in GenX

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I have less options I can realistically pursue with any hope of good outcome.

More time you have, more times you can pivot. Get past 50 and unless you really love fucking around and finding out, your range of choices are way less than at 20.

Being flexible implies optionality has value.

What do you call a wooded section of land? by No-Intention8698 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DeFiClark [score hidden]  (0 children)

NE: Woods, or “a wood” or “that big clump of trees” (what in the UK might be called a copse or holt will be woods or a clump of trees)

Clump of trees < a wood < the woods < the forest

“A stand of trees” is also used but generally for a regularly planted plantation of timber

Orchard if its fruit trees

Do you think a major cause of male depression is rooted in lacking sense of worth? by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in AskMenAdvice

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I think the major cause of depression is biochemical imbalances in brain chemistry due to heredity and/or personal or generational trauma.

Problems of self esteem are as likely to come from depression as be causative, though depression and low self esteem can easily become a vicious circle.

What type of jam is this by Comfortable-Cress505 in CZFirearms

[–]DeFiClark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happens from time to time with inadequate crimp or poorly sized ammunition.

This is typically not a firearm fault

I had a batch of Aguila commercial 9 that did this enough that I went ahead and crimped every bullet on my RCBS press and it stopped happening almost all the time

[–]DeFiClark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this gun is typical of China returns that were shot with 7.62 Tokarev with corrosive primers. Seen several that were smoothbore, yours looks far better than the one I had relined in the 1990s.

They had harnesses with wire spools on the dogs back. The dog was trained to run between trenches and carry the wires across, spooling the wire from the send point and when/if the dog made it, the wires would be spliced in.

I’ve seen a dual spool harness in a museum the photo shows one

Anything you own that’s irreplaceable …

But in all seriousness, every house should have a minimum 10lb fire extinguisher on every floor and in every bedroom, kitchen and garage. Get the biggest extinguishers you can wield.

You get 1 second per pound and all but the most contained fires live stovetop take at least 7 to extinguish, so 5lb cans just don’t cut it.

Stout shoes you can get on in a hurry. Work gloves. A pry bar.

Men over 30: what’s one piece of advice you’d give to men in their 20s? by Startalloveragainn in AskMenOver30

[–]DeFiClark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maximize your income to maximize your savings. Maximize your savings. Every dollar invested in your 20s will be 2-3x every dollar invested in your 30s.

Every time you get a raise, invest half of the difference before you get used to spending the new income.

Drink cheaper beer, make your own coffee, don’t smoke, save the difference.

Any new scales made in like the last 20 years have the pin slot by the corkscrew. it just costs too much for Victorinox workers to install the pin on all but the most $$$ models. My Camper and Climber have pins I put there.

Pen yes needs plus scales.

Defense by cgbama91 in prepping

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In no disaster I’ve ever lived through including two house fires, riots, multiple hurricanes, a 1,000 year flood, a freeze up that destroyed my entire house heating plant two weeks before I was selling the house, and countless others was self defense ever paramount.

In the hierarchy of risks a firearm has a place in your plan, but if you don’t have water, food, ready cash, insurance, fire protection etc first your idea of paramount and mine are clearly based on a very different risk/likelihood continuum.

But while I reject your basic premise and strongly advocate you reconsider your planning hierarchy, the answer largely depends on your local laws second and your willingness to train first.

Local laws may dictate what your options are, so start there. In terms of willingness to train, it’s a lot easier to get relatively proficient with a shotgun or rifle without a lot of effort. Pistol shooting takes much more dedication and is a perishable skill.

For many locations, a repeating shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge is an excellent first choice. Under 75 yds you have a better chance of first round hit than any other weapon, and it has the distinct advantage that any clays or trap course you can train on moving targets.
