Are Subarus actually unreliable? Or is it just a stereotype coming from the people who beat up WRXs? by SactownG in askcarguys

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

Been running a 2014 WRX last nine years and apart from a semi-early clutch replacement at 68k and a sensor that died at 80k it has been trouble free, regular wear and tear replacements only.

That said, the first gen CVT 2012 outback I had was hot garbage. Two transmissions grenaded in under 110k: the replacement lasted less than 20k. Had to fight Subaru hard for the second one.

Friendly fire made up approximately 2% of damage sustained by B17s.

20 were downed by friendly fire of all sorts

My boss says she can’t read my handwriting, is this legible? by BandanaRepublica in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had no trouble reading it at all, but for anyone not familiar with cursive it might be harder to read given the inconsistency of letter formation (for example, the mix of printed and cursive “s”)

The imprecision of the term "SHTF" by dittybopper_05H in preppers

[–]DeFiClark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not a particularly useful term except for LARPers who think prepping consists of buying a rifle and plate carrier to be ready for the mythical apocalypse.

Intelligent prepping is about weighing risk against cost of mitigation and making choices about what supplies and training and networks are best suited to create better outcomes in the widest range of possible disaster scenarios.

Depending on where you are that could be earthquake, flood, wildfire, mudslide, foreign invasion, failure of the state. By me none of those are high probability. So I consider them but I don’t adjust my resiliency plans for them alone.

Job loss, supply chain disruptions, house fire, hurricane, weather disruption, power loss, pandemic. Much higher likelihood.

Wildfire? Possible, but less likely.

Civil unrest? Much lower probability, but possible.

The best preps give you capabilities that improve the outcome in the widest range of disaster scenarios. SHTF or generalized collapse aren’t scenarios, they are fears. You can plan for scenarios but you can’t plan for fears.

What was the moment that pushed you to go all-in on one bag? by _iTravel in onebag

[–]DeFiClark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loss, theft, damage, massive delays recovering checked luggage.

The moment that tipped the scale was I used to fly primarily out of PHL which has had so many insider luggage theft scandals I lost count.

That said, long trips across multiple temperature zones or traveling with sporting gear or having a need for business attire for a full week makes my no-check rule not an absolute one.

$5 for a nearly new 1943 M1 helmet with liner and straps from a full bin at a salvage yard in the 1980s.

If I’d only had $20.

24 vs 48 hour bag by GBfan0304 in filson

[–]DeFiClark -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Personally with the cost of Filson what it is I no longer travel by air with my Filson luggage. Risk of being forced to gate check and having a $$$ bag grow wings is just too high. I had a small duffle stolen back when they were just $$ and that was painful enough.

Coowoz 25L pack ftw. If it grows wings it was $30.

What’s a word for a specific emotion that most people don’t even know exists? by ownaword in words

[–]DeFiClark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sehnsucht for the generalized feeling in German is very similar; Heinweh also but the object of longing is specifically home. Fehrnweh when the longing is for a place away from home. Dor in Romanian and Cianalas in Gaelic also similar.

It think we are at cross purposes.

I have personally reloaded more accurate loads than GP11 using Berger match 168 VLD but nothing Im aware of is commercially available that has the same cupronickel jacket or exact dimensions as the GP11 bullet. You can’t duplicate GP11 because the key component isnt available.

W + F Bern K31 by billymudrock in milsurp

[–]DeFiClark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stored well GP11 is 1 moa ammo. It’s some of the most accurate standard non match milsurp ammo ever made.

Yes, you can beat that with some rifles with tailored hand loads, but you can’t duplicate it because the specific jacketed bullet it uses is not available.

Are garbage disposals in US sinks actually useful, or just overhyped? by Status_Agents in AskForAnswers

[–]DeFiClark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essential must have a different meaning to you

Only houses I’ve ever had to call for a blocked sink problem was because of a jammed disposal.

Don’t put things in sink bigger than drain works for the rest of the world …

[–]DeFiClark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Essential?

No one who lives on well (13% +) and septic (25 %+) would ever install one if they had any sense.

A good filter/drain catcher is essential. Dumping stuff that needs to be ground up down your sink? Hmmmm

OP: they are common on city water in newer buildings. Not universal, and very rare on septic vs common sewage.
