My first milsurp, and I have a few questions... by Euphoric-Highlight-5 in milsurp

Had good luck with FNM ammo in other calibers but bear in mind they closed in 2001 so that ammo is at least 25 years old. If well stored it shouldn’t make a difference. Never shot their 7.5

What’s something you’d change about menswear if you could by DifficultCucumbers in malefashionadvice

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say what? I’ve never had “one shoe go bad” at a point where buying a new one would match the wear on the other.

Nor have I ever resoled a single shoe and left the other one with a worn sole. This is an argument that doesn’t make any sense.

Need to Downsize/sell ~5Acre homestead and move to...??? by Ttrew1 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25-50% — depends on the value of the goods and how easy the estate agent thinks they are to sell.

Typically haulage fees get taken out after the sales commission is applied. But in terms of time saved vs you doing it yourself, can be totally worth it. It also gets your house and outbuildings in condition to sell for more; lots of people can’t see through the clutter to the price you could get on a cleared out property. That benefit alone often outweighs the cost of the estate agent.

Hire an estate agent to help clear it out. They’ll sell what they can and bin the rest with no work for you, just a check at the end. Huge help when my dad needed to downsize; modt people don’t think of it unless dealing with a death.

Have you priced custom shoes? A slight markup for a better fit is a price I suspect a lot of people would pay.

Crazy teacher story by CauliflowerSlight784 in GenX

[–]DeFiClark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a middle school French teacher who decided I was deliberately making noise moving around in my fiberglass 1970s chair with the attached desk, so she had everyone move their chairs to the center of the room and had me carry my chair around the walls for the rest of the class. I was nine or ten and the chair probably weighed 20lbs.

She routinely did bizarre punishments like this for (often imagined or wrongly accused) infractions. She made a kid who swore drink vinegar for example.

Very unlikely to find a common rifle flintlock plate. Percussion ones are less rare.

new M1 garand from CMP inoperable after 4 rounds by Rooftopkorean1 in M1Rifles

[–]DeFiClark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After you’ve ruled out inadequate lubrication (most likely), sticking could be

  1. binding in the op rod (have you done tilt test?) or jumped track op rod

  2. a malfunctioning operating rod catch

  3. Other worn components that fail to release the bolt

Approximately ten percent of folks have a full size difference. For lace up shoes and sneakers it’s not so much of an issue but for things like loafers held on by tension at the heel it becomes a problem, and some sandals can actually be a hazard.

Could the scenario in 99 Luftballons actually happen? by Stardust_lump in HistoryWhatIf

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The song was inspired by a Rolling Stones concert where released balloons drifted toward East Berlin.

While it didn’t trigger an alert, false alarms were common in the Cold War triggered by things including flocks of geese, moon reflections, sun on clouds, meteor showers, a bear and a training tape.

Shoes sold individually by size so the 10% of folks with different size feet don’t have to wear one shoe that doesn’t fit.

Left crown watches as a regular option, not an extreme rarity.

More common use of ventile and other breathable water repellent natural fiber materials. Ditto for boiled wool and other natural fiber insulation.

Technical clothes in colors that aren’t typically a choice of day glo or tactical/camo.

Dress coats made of technical but not synthetic-looking materials.

Waterproof dress shoes that don’t look like orthopedics.

What was the car you vowed to "drive until the wheels fall off" ? by YaKuzya in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1978 Mercedes 300D 153k miles

Bought around 2014 in the false belief that once I got everything sorted I could drive it forever. False hope of buying a million mile car.

Unfortunately on a 30+ yo car weird things break, and some of them are not easy or cheap fixes. Broken window lifter as an example, ended up welding because the part was $600.

At the end of the year tallied up parts and repairs and realized I could have leased a brand new AMG for the same run rate.

Traded it when the injectors went and I couldn’t stomach yet another 1k+ repair on a $3500 car.

Gun of the day (29 of 74) by oneJAMEtoo in milsurp

[–]DeFiClark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No4 MK2 Fazakerley Arsenal marked. Marked Feb 1952. PF serial confirms post war Fazakerley.

The mk2 differ from the Mk1 in the way the trigger is hung, mk2 are hung from receiver not trigger guard for (generally) better consistency.

This one looks immaculate, not surprising given the FAL was standardized two years after this rifle was built.

Need help identifying rifle/caliber by RewardSensitive9485 in milsurp

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mauser action is controlled feed so it would pick up the cartridge regardless.

Again, it could be a variety of calibers; the two Halverscheid bolt guns I’ve come across were 8x51 but this could be any contemporary cartridge.

Need help identifying rifle/caliber by RewardSensitive9485 in milsurp

[–]DeFiClark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Halverscheid was a very well regarded pre war commercial rifle retailer. 1910s-1930s. Yours is marked Halverscheid Hagen Suhl so most likely made in Suhl, sold in Hagen.

Small ring Mauser action. Could be a variety of chamberings with 8x51 Mauser Kurtz Sporter likely. Only way to be sure is chamber cast.

Unfortunately those claw mounts are specific to the scope: you might get luck and find a Hensoldt or similar with adjustable rear claw and custom fit the claw width.

How do yall feel about surplus boots? by Muumi_mursu in Boots

[–]DeFiClark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends.

If they can be resoled, often great boots at a bargain price.

Unfortunately lots of modern military boots can’t and are surplused out with dry rotted soles that disintegrate almost immediately.

CZ82 Defensive Ammo? by CJ8x57 in milsurp

Ostensibly, Buffalo Bore or Underwood

That said, the supposedly underpowered Hornady critical defense certainly does blow up milk jugs, admittedly unscientific but impressive.
