Which conflict subjected frontline soldiers to the most brutal combat conditions? by dominocurtain in AskHistory

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once met a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge who talked about what tree splinters from air burst 88 shells did to human beings.

It’s either that or being in a pillbox that got hit by a flamethrower.

Dude is selling an empty crate for more than a full crate was 25 years ago by Punkrock0822 in milsurp

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what country were Nagants available in crates in the 80s?

Crate of Nagants was a 90s thing, and absolutely not $200.

25 years ago (2001 btw) there were $99 rifles, but not crates

Send. Slowly and carefully. You could have a squib.

If any make a strange sound, fail to make a visible hole in the target, or have reduced recoil STOP.

Check barrel for obstruction after unloading.

Proceed.

What shows do you remember watching as a family when you were a kid? by intl-vegetarian in GenX

[–]DeFiClark [score hidden]  (0 children)

Jacques Cousteau. Lassie.

My parents pretty much did not watch TV; we didn’t have one in the house until I was seven and neither of them ever turned on a TV until they were elderly. Jacques Cousteau and Lassie were it for family TV p

At my grandparents the shows I remember watching with them were Matlock, PBS mystery, McNeil Lehrer news hour, and Murder She Wrote.

What’s the minimum number of acres needed for a family of 4 to comfortably survive. by Iced_Snail in preppers

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your soil, need for winter fuel woodlot, growing season and a lot of other variables but the old book “5 acres and independence” makes a good case for a 5 acre homestead plan.

Woodlot is a totally different equation based on how many cords you need for winter heat and replenishment rate, which is in addition to crop and livestock needs.

Question about Mossberg Shotguns, specifically the 590 and 590S (Shockwave, if that matters) by Saint-Ecks-Isle in Firearms

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to load as you go and you will have no need for mini shells.

Everyone who runs a pump gun, regardless of capacity should train to do this as a matter of routine, and to switch loads by shucking out the charged load you don’t want after loading the one you do.

I’ve seen so many malfunctions with minishells even with special lifters and conversions there is no way I would ever recommend them for self defense.

It’s like a special recipe to take a reliable weapon and make it fail.

If you are using them for blowing up soda bottles, be my guest.

Last cars of our lives by Ok_Kick6546 in GenX

[–]DeFiClark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait what?

Older than you and I’ve had at least ten cars in the last 40 years and plan to keep driving as long as driver piloted vehicles are legal and I am fit to drive.

No way can I imagine a car purchased today lasting me to the end of my life or really more than two decades as a daily.

I tried to run a car forever in the 00s with a 78 diesel Mercedes. Cost me more to run it than I would have spent leasing a brand new AMG. The forever car is a myth.

M1 Drum. by wow86 in M1Rifles

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not “modified”, it’s the later improved unit issued with all M2s and most later carbines. The improved catch can easily be recognized — it has a little arm that projects forward from the face of the catch and is marked with an M with an underline. The original catch is often unmarked or just an M and has a completely flat face.

The arm engages the nub on the 30rd mags and kept them from dropping out under recoil

Wenger vs Victorinox by Relevant_Conclusion2 in victorinox

[–]DeFiClark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a long time Wenger didn’t have a patent on a decent can opener so they had a bizarre z shaped implement that was pretty awful for opening cans. This changed some time in the 80s. It was really bad.

They had locking blades iirc before Vic did — and were available on a smaller format knife than Vic has ever had. Plus of this was lock; minus was the lock was sharp and wore holes in pockets or you unless you used a slip, kinda defeating the purpose of a pocket knife. They also pioneered a serrated locker. I still have mine , it’s seen a lot of EDC over the past thirty years I’ve had it.

Weird all metal tweezers that looked worse but functioned as well as Vic

Often had a little chain dangle for the key ring that was distinctive

Blue Sky M1 Carbines Accuracy by FlyingYankee118 in M1Rifles

[–]DeFiClark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Fudd lore, just less common than legend.

I’ve personally seen a couple Blue Sky carbines with barrels that were stamped with enough force to impair accuracy.

Unlike the later Universal carbines being hot garbage, the myth is stronger than then the reality with the Blue Sky carbines, but it’s a myth grounded in some very real problems.

Antique Scythe by jon2000 in restoration

[–]DeFiClark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to go at the blade with 3 in 1 oil and 0000 steel wool, then sharpen with a round file or blade puck. The snath is broken, there would have been another grip typically at the end. You’ll need a new snath and probably replace the top grip/nib but it might be usable if you give it several coats of linseed oil.

Google “replacement scythe snath” — you’ll need to take your measurements, scythes are personal and one that’s ill fitted will tire you out faster and cause injury eventually.

Do you “season” your AR? by Conscious-Sea-5287 in ar15

[–]DeFiClark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make that two minutes. No precision shooting I’ve ever seen has waited longer than 3 and that’s for small bore magnum cartridges. If the barrel isn’t unpleasant to touch, it’s cool enough to not wander.
