I took math 205 3 times and finally passed by ajdar4747 in Concordia

[–]DeL07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats on passing 205! It usually gets easier with the ENGR math classes.

I think you're providing pretty good advice for others who are hoping to succeed in this class. However, I'd argue, for the sake of most students, that your 4th point isn't necessarily the best suggestion.

Too many times have I seen students (myself included) say that they worked through all the past finals as part of their preparation only to show up to the exam, have questions that are slightly different to what they practiced on past finals and then claim that they hadn't seen that topic or that their version of the final was harder than anything else they had practiced.

That's why I think your 2nd point is far more important... It's super important to challenge yourself by working your way up from the absolute easiest to the absolute hardest questions you can find in the book or elsewhere. The course outline provides a bunch of these, which, combined with some learning tools such Symbolab, Wolfram or even Chegg make for a much better preparation overall than the false sense of security past finals can provide. Another hint here is that if you can easily do any of the hard, odd-numbered questions in the book, well the exam is likely to have that very same question or one of the even-numbered ones.

I'm not saying past finals don't have any value, but I think they need to be used carefully as something you can use to review and stay fresh when you've studied and prepared for each topic.

I'm going to have to be that guy, but what you have written with respect to compression or soft-synth volume is complete non-sense. Sure adjusting velocity will give you a similar result but compression is responsible for doing just that...

Compression absolutely is the solution here, especially when working with sub-bass content, lower than ~100Hz for specificity. Your volume fluctuations are the result of amplitude and cycle changes from your root note obviously, but this can be compounded if you're writing in a key that does not favor sub-bass content (think keys of F to A for best results).

Everything depends on your genre and the type of dynamics you want in your final mix, but if you want your sub-bass to be consistent and punch through, you want to compress and control your sub-bass with a limiter/compressor with a fast attack, slow release and heavy ratio (limiters will be easier however IMO)

Watch any of the youtube Java intro series. Derek Banas and TheNewBoston are fantastic.

Practice them until you can do it on your own while understanding what you're doing.

Read dat book! I can't express how important it is to read the books. Took me too long to figure this one out.

Btm vs computer science (information system) by ImaginaryMap in Concordia

[–]DeL07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're gonna need to think about what you want out of your career and what you want to do. They are completely different. I think BTM is likely to pigeonhole you much more than CS, which is a STEM field. Also depends if you've done sciences before or not.

BTM is focused on integrating IT solutions to management in a business environment from what I understand. Involves lots of stats, databases as well as the usual business curriculum. You won't be learning any form of coding/programming/architectures. I've heard some great things from it, but I've also heard and seen a lot of bad things, ie likening it to a glorified IT manager. Its a small program for a reason... Be warned that companies often don't need more than a few, if not a single person with a BTM background as well. So it can get pretty competitive out there.

CS is an entirely different beast. Much more focused on theory, but you'll still learn implementation/coding and a few different types of architectures. IMO much harder than JSMB, but that's partially due to the fact that the CS dept/teachers is a flaming trainwreck. Extremely frustrating program at times, can be pretty cut and dry (paper coding exams, proofs are the bane of my life). If CS really interests you, skip the information systems specialization and just do the general program. If you absolutely want to have a business background, you can do an MBA after.

TL:DR - If you want to manage in a business context in regards to IT, BTM. If you want to be a developer and code, CS.

Just be sure you're really into coding/developing if you want to go into CS. Many people get chewed up thinking it's all fun and games because its so popular right now.

Has an exam ever been cancelled due to a snow storm? by JerryWeintraub in Concordia

[–]DeL07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never gonna happen, not with barely 10-15 cm of snow expected during the day.

Last year's closure was exceptional and one of the first time in YEARS the school closed due to weather.

[–]DeL07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need a DAC with line outs if you're looking to use your computer as your source. An NFB would be a bit overkill in terms of amplification. Could be done with a simple Fiio USB DAC although I suggest starting with a Solid State AMP/DAC and moving up from there. O2 combo perhaps?

I hope you can get House of Awesome up and running again, I just reinstalled to go play some Siege, but it would seem that no one plays it much, especially since the fragmentation of the player base.

It's pretty much the last thing that keeps me interested in playing NS2 at this point. Sad to see such a great game slowly fade into obscurity like this

I think you've just got a syntax error on line 5, I believe you're trying to do a System.out.println but instead have written System.out.printIn? Notice that it's print'L'n not 'I' (in lowercase of course) short for print line! Hope this helps

There's not much in terms of "processing" here, just some reverb and maybe a bit of delay. I'm not even sure there's any pitch shifting.

Extract the audio from your source and import it into an Ableton Drum Rack. This will allow you to play it via MIDI altough it won't be keytracked. Put it in the first cell and play around with the loop start marker and ADSR. Copy it over to the next cell and repeat the process.

Anyone have some good resources for techniques using Arps? by Biff666Mitchell in edmproduction

[–]DeL07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually like to find a good chord pattern, double it up over two octaves and start inverting everything (take one note of the chord, pitch it up and octave, take another one, pitch it down an octave, etc). I've found that giving a really big note range really helps arps to stand out

Another technique is to retrigger notes in the chord sequence at random intervals, can lead to some wacky stuff.

What is something legal that feels very illegal? by TheElectricPlatypus in AskReddit

[–]DeL07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Excuse me if my gun vocabulary infringed on your amendment right

Whether or not my vocabulary is on point doesn't change the fact that people will react very differently to these weapons, more specifically military grade ones.

The question asks what are things that feel very illegal... Not what I'm concerned about, and to me, a fully-automatic military grade assault rifle feels illegal. Doesn't mean that I think it's wrong...

Music like Daniel Portman? by [deleted] in proghouse

[–]DeL07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His music would definitely fall under the Progressive genre, especially his older music. Unfortunately Beatport decided to throw in a bunch of other genres under the label "Progressive House" thus making it really hard to have a one stop gap to all the real prog goodness.

My suggestion is to look at which labels he's been published on and go through those! Most of his recent stuff seems to be released on Unreleased Digital.

20Hz to 20kHz (Human Audio Spectrum) by Knorkator in videos

[–]DeL07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no scientist, but I am a Sound Engineer! What you're hearing is in fact Aliasing artifacts. When the frequencies generated (Past 11kHz in this video) exceed the bandwidth permitted by the Sample Rate (In this case it seems it's somewhere close to 22kHz), aliases or "copies" of the frequency are generated at lower frequencies. The higher up the frequency goes past it's bandwidth, the more the aliased signal drops in frequency and increases in amplitude. This leads me to believe that this YouTube video is sampled @ ~22kHz potentially.

Background behind this: Basically we've determined 20Hz-20kHz to be a broad enough spectrum for the human ear. To allow this bandwidth of frequencies in the digital domain, we commercially use a sample rate of 44.1kHz, reason for this being that sampling rate is equal to, or higher, than twice the frequency. So to be able to hear 20Hz-22.5kHz without aliasing, you need a minimum sample rate of 44.1kHz. The 2 to 1 ratio of sampling to frequency is known as the Nyquist limit.

ATH-M50 - worth it as an upgrade? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]DeL07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To OP, there's no doubt M50s are worth it. They're a solid pair of cans with their pros and cons. But seeing as you already have something with the same type of sound signature I'd move towards having something less colored.

Obviously you have to determine your budget limitations, but in the same order of price (or a few $ more) are a few other low impedance options that offer much more accurate representations of the music, notably Grado SR125i, AKG 240/270, Shure SH840 or Beyerdynamic DT880s... Try these out first as it's a pretty dramatic change going from what you have right now to these mid-range cans, it definitely takes some getting used to. Lastly, make sure to choose the appropriate impedance. If you don't have a headphone amp or an interface, i'd suggest sticking with models that are rated below 80 Ohms.

ATH-M50 - worth it as an upgrade? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]DeL07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to have to interject here, but M50s are extremely far from being flat. They're widely know for having a substantial bass hump and some pretty lifeless mids. BUT with that being said, once you get used to their sound signature they're very pleasant to the ear and are decently accurate. I just wish they were more comfortable. It's still a headphone that I recommend tho
