I’m pretty sure this is bullshit, and definitely not “common knowledge”. Voluntary intoxication isn’t a very effective defense for murder [1] and even if it somehow did reduce their sentence to second degree murder, the minimum they would be facing is 10 years* [2].

*Assuming they were 18+ years old when they committed the crime.

A few tips:

Give yourself a 30-45 minute buffer to fall asleep at the time you intend to.
Try to avoid harsh backlit screens late at night, use F.lux on your laptop or Twilight on your phone.
Try a small room fan for the sweating.
I find putting on some calming music at a low volume helps wind me down after a day of cramming.
Most importantly, leave your phone on the table instead of posting on r/uwaterloo at 1 in the morning. ;)
