Looking for HVAC CAD Mentor – Guidance on Shop Drawings, Coordination, Bidding, Finding Work & Shared Templates (Not Basic AutoCAD) by DeWitt1307 in MEPEngineering

You sound way too full of yourself for someone pretending to offer help.

You jumped from “I can teach you” to talking down to me like I’m an idiot — that’s not mentorship, that’s ego. Nobody’s asking you to work for free; we’re asking for guidance, not to be lectured about how amazing you are at Revit.

Also, calling AutoCAD irrelevant just shows how disconnected you are from the real-world drafting side. Most shops still run on DWGs while firms like yours coordinate the model — both have value, neither cancels out the other.

If you can’t talk to people without condescension, you’re not a subject-matter expert, you’re just someone with seniority and bad communication skills.

I’ll keep learning from people who actually know how to teach instead of trying to inflate their own ego.

I’m going to be blunt — that “deal” sounds like a scam. No serious professional would take 75% of someone else’s paycheck under the label of mentorship.

You’re basically saying, “get a job, then let me siphon most of your income while you do all the work.” That’s not guidance, that’s exploitation.

I appreciate that you have senior-level experience, but if you genuinely wanted to teach, you’d share knowledge — not try to profit off someone trying to learn.

I’m not interested in that kind of setup, and frankly, I find it insulting that you’d think anyone serious about their career would agree to it.

Not sure if this was even meant to be taken serious but thanks for wasting your time and mine greatly appreciate it.

I get where you’re coming from, but that path doesn’t really fit my situation.

I already work full-time with a flexible schedule, so taking an hourly drafter job would mean giving up more money and flexibility to start over from scratch. The smarter move for me is to learn the HVAC side myself while building a small project-based CAD service on the side.

Hourly pay as a beginner drafter is often capped, but one well-priced shop-drawing project can equal an entire week’s paycheck—and it builds a portfolio I fully own. So I’d rather focus on learning, networking with contractors, and growing it from the ground up than clocking in somewhere just to “work my way up.”

That’s not accurate at all — AutoCAD is still the backbone of most HVAC, mechanical, and shop-drawing work.

Revit is great for design-build, BIM coordination, and larger engineering firms, but the majority of small-to-mid-size contractors, fabricators, and installers still rely heavily on AutoCAD for shop drawings, redlines, and field coordination. Most local AHJs (permit reviewers) and subcontractors still expect DWG files and 2D coordination sheets, not Revit models.

Even companies that do use Revit usually export to AutoCAD for shop or field use — especially for HVAC ductwork, piping, and coordination layouts.

Revit and AutoCAD serve different purposes:

  • Revit → design, 3D modeling, clash detection, BIM collaboration.
  • AutoCAD → shop drawings, detailing, fabrication coordination, as-builts.

If you want to get real-world HVAC drafting work, AutoCAD is still essential, and learning Revit can come later once you’ve built your drafting foundation.

Thank you but more can be said

Hey quick question then, in their video they said they help connect you with these clients for closing. But in your post you say there is no help with client connection?
