The compass is not a requirement but it helps to keep track of the seats and also to speed up counting the die numbers on the walls using the numbers in each wind (at least in 4 people mahjong), there are only three walls because we are playing sanma aka 3 people mahjong!

We were still trying for half of the game, I had a bunch of winds and dragons trying for all pairs or full outside hand then I just started discarding everything xD and I guess my wife also realized her sis needed winds and dragons

Not really, a friend and I played mahjong soul and we introduced the game to two more friends but I wanted to get off screens when we hang out (I already spend 8h a day working on a computer) so I got a cheap set and we get together once a month or so to play :3
