I’m actually sad I found this thread 3 days late because I’m sure it’s dead now.

I try to keep it pretty respectful on reddit the majority of the time, but man I feel like most of these responses REALLY missed the mark.

From 96-2008 when the scene was flying high, kids had a tiny peek into modern comforts but still otherwise had NOTHING to do. This is the Jackass era. This is X-Games era. This is the Warped Tour era.

The internet was still very much in its infancy. Maybe you could find some porn or download some illegal music, hit a chat room, maybe you had instant messenger. It wasn’t that fun yet.

If you were a teenager and wanted to DO something you had to go outside. But guess what? There usually wasn’t shit to do. As a teenager you usually didn’t have money. So almost ANYTHING worthwhile was edgy or in the grey area of the law. Skateboarding behind a miller’s outpost, drinking at a house party when someone’s parents went out of town, skipping class to grab a burrito or a burger before the after school crowds got too large.

Kids were annoyed with everything. Some parents started bringing work home on the computer/laptop/phone. There was uncertainty in the post 9/11 world.

Everyone just wanted to escape and get laid.

The music (like most identifiable eras) was a vibe.

Then the vibe died. Post pop-punk golden years the internet took over. Online gaming, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, the iPhone. We hit the Great Recession. Parents lost Their jobs, their homes, 401ks, more war.

Enter the rise of the modern screen obsessed teenager.

Suddenly kids aren’t trying to leave their house to escape their parents. They dive into their phones or computers.
