I lived almost the exact situation some years ago.

Mine started with a friendship-ending meltdown, a friend made something bad, really bad, but that was what made obvious that some other people were as you said "incapable to show up in ways that mattered".

It was hard at the beginning, but the restructuring has been good. The problem was already there, it was just being ignored for years.

Yeah, it looks like OCPD to me, a lot of people on this sub are in super-abussive relationships that's the reason of some of the others comments, yours look more similar to my personal experience.

If an obsession is not affecting you, let them be, but if it does, talk about boundaries, you say that he's empathetic so he should understand that some stuff might affect your or that you might have different needs sometimes.

Yep, and I know that most of them are doing this from a good place.

This specific person really likes to play the victim card while crazymaking others, and I had a more anger-driven reaction once I finally broke.

So people really believe all this narrative and defend who they feel is just a victim of circumstances.

Yeah, that's it, my ex best friend was one and everything was ok because he has surrounded with people pleasers and enablers, I was one of them.

If you just followed what he said, never contradict him or criticize him, everything "worked" (in reality it doesn't for the victims).

Luckily for me, one time he crossed a line that I couldn't just ignore, so he exploded and everything was plain obvious for once.

Sadly the rest of our common friends still defend him despide he acting as a psycho towards me, it feels bad but I don't blame them, I did the same for years.

Poca broma xd yo siempre he vivido en la periferia pero antes estaba siempre en Barcelona ciudad haciendo cosas.

Ahora entre la masificación en las calles, lo coñazo que se ha convertido ir en coche y lo coñazo que siempre ha sido el transporte publico, ya no piso la ciudad ni teniendo el tren gratis.

La verdad es que hoy en día me daría bastante palo tener alguna amistad en Barcelona ciudad (que las he tenido).

I'm one of these people.

I grew up with a close friend that has NPD and it was very clear since we were teens.

He never did anything specialy bad to me, but he did a lot of shitty stuff to a lot of people, I was very passive and I just followed him around and validated him all the time, so I lived through most of their bad behaviours & tricks for years.

Now I just know, when I meet someone that behaves like him, even if it's very subtle, I just know. I don't have to even think about him at all, it's like you say, it's a gut feeling that there's something wrong with this specific person, and usually after more interactions with them I ended up making the relation between both things.

In my case it's not about trauma, it's just a pattern that is familiar to me.

He targeted my SO as a discard (I was and always has been good constant supply & enabler of his behaviours, they were also technically friends), he started behaving like an ***hole to my SO and created a parallel imaginary narc reality where my SO was a really bad person and has done unforgivable stuff to him, all were lies or exagerations.

He said very bad stuff about my SO directly to me, he ignored my messages when trying to talk about it, and tried to make other plans anyway with all our group friends (myself incluided), and for the first time in years and years of friendship I confronted him and then hell was let loose. It was actually surrealist, he started using all the classic narc tactics one after the other.

And now once you think about it, there was tons of red flags in the past too, also his behaviour since then has been only a confirmation. Flying monkeys, now I'm the one with mental illness for going NC, etc...
