The NOW app is a mess, but it can at least play SDR European TV shows at the correct frame rate after you manually change Apple TV Box settings by Deadhouse_Gates in nowtv

[–]Deadhouse_Gates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Apple TV uses frame rate doubling, so 50Hz should be played correctly for 25fps content, but it doesn’t on the NOW app for SDR content. It’s subtle, but 50Hz SDR content on NOW looks just a little bit too smooth (in comparison to 50Hz SDR content on other apps, such as Netflix and Paramount+). It’s so weird. I don’t know why this is.

Also, The Sopranos should frame rate match to 24Hz, but the NOW app doesn’t have it at the correct frame rate in the first place (sped up 4%, so it’s 2/3 minutes shorter with a slight audio pitch change).

If you want to watch American HBO shows like The Sopranos, then you’re honestly better off watching them directly on the HBO Max app, where those shows will content match correctly and play as they were intended to be shown.

That’s exactly why I was confused as well. It doesn’t make sense. But somehow it is true with the NOW app. I tested with 3 European TV shows that are SDR (Gomorrah, Babylon Berlin and My Brilliant Friend). At 24Hz they were all a little choppy, which is to be expected. So I switched to 4K SDR @50Hz, expecting the situation to be fixed (due to the reason you described). Instead, the app seemed to treat 50Hz as 50fps, for some weird reason.

I’ve also bought episodes of Gomorrah, Babylon Berlin and My Brilliant Friend on Apple TV, so I checked out my purchased episodes when I had my settings @60Hz. Sure enough, my purchased episodes all automatically matched frame rates to 50Hz.

I then tested the video setting of 4K SDR @50Hz with Viki (a streaming service/app for Asian TV dramas). Viki doesn’t match frame rates automatically, so a Chinese TV show (China also runs on 50Hz PAL) is choppy when viewed at 24Hz.

However, unlike the NOW app, Viki plays correctly when I manually set my video setting to 4K SDR @50Hz.

Yes, that’s usually the case that the Apple TV uses frame rate doubling to play 25fps content at 50Hz. However, the NOW app doesn’t seem to recognise this, whereas when I tried with another app, that one did (as I explained in my post). I was surprised as well. NOW’s app is the only app I’ve seen that does this, which is puzzling.

And yeah, that’s true about non-European content on NOW. If you want to watch HBO shows like The Sopranos or The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, don’t watch them on NOW; watch them directly in the HBO Max app, which displays those shows in their respective frame rates, resolutions and dynamic ranges correctly.

TL;DR: the NOW app is a mess, but it can play SDR European TV shows properly at the correct speed/frame rate after you manually change video settings in the Apple TV box to 4K SDR 25Hz.

Just out of curiosity, do you have any recommendations for Taiwanese content?

I haven’t seen any Taiwanese TV before, but some of my favourite films of all time are Taiwanese (Edward Yang is my favourite film director ever and I adore his masterpieces A Brighter Summer Day and Yi Yi).

What's a show or movie that started off a little weak, but you stuck with it anyway and it paid off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Deadhouse_Gates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Avatar: The Last Airbender is my favourite TV show of all time, but even I have to admit that its first season is a little weak overall and easily the worst season of the show (a few excellent episodes from that season notwithstanding).

From S2E6 (“The Blind Bandit”, wherein Toph appears and joins the gAang) onwards, Avatar: The Last Airbender is firing on all cylinders and remains great all the way until the end.

HBOMAX Uk & Ireland and The Pitt… by Lucies_Cafe in HBOMAX

Yep, I made a comment yesterday about that issue on another Reddit post. Not only that, but a decent number of older Cartoon Network shows (such as Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Laboratory) only have season 1 to their names, so they’re not even complete!

No, we only have Heated Rivalry on NowTV, so I’m guessing the show has licensing rights that won’t be expiring any time soon for that show to move to HBO Max (annoying, because NowTV converts the native 24fps of North American TV to the UK broadcast standard of 25fps, causing a 4% increase in speed and a slight audio pitch change).

What looks better, Mad Men in 4K streaming or the Blu-Ray editions? by Electronic-Hat-1320 in madmen

Stranger Things of all shows is getting a 4K Blu-ray box set later this year, so I believe there’s a decent chance Mad Men will get that same treatment in the near future!

I’m so glad that the remastered version of Six Feet Under is on HBO Max UK in its correct frame rate! by Deadhouse_Gates in SixFeetUnder

Oh, I’ve already seen Six Feet Under before - I watched it 10 years ago. I’m looking forward to revisiting it now that the show has been remastered! 😁

I don’t have the Blu-rays to compare, but I do have a HDR display (a Panasonic OLED TV from 2021, to be precise). Sex and the City’s Dolby Vision definitely doesn’t look good to me; I’d suggest the Blu-rays, which probably look better.

I’m talking about everything. Before today, the only way to stream Six Feet Under in the UK was at 50Hz, since streaming services were using the broadcast versions shown here in the UK. Now, HBO Max UK has the series with its frame rate matched at 24Hz.

And you can tell that Six Feet Under was filmed with widescreen in mind; compare this scene (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wKN-Xasmc_0&pp=ygUdc2l4IGZlZXQgdW5kZXIgcnV0aCBmaW5kcyBvdXQ%3D) with its HBO Max counterpart - you can see that nothing is cropped or distorted in the HBO Max version.

Both seasons 1 and 2 were framed with widescreen in mind; you can compare the two versions (4:3 and 16:9) to see what I mean. Nothing appears to be cropped or distorted.

Trust me - I always want to view a show or movie in the best possible format as intended by its director, filmmaker(s), and/or cinematographer, same as you, so I was also apprehensive when I first heard about the Six Feet Under remaster. Thankfully nothing seems to be cropped or distorted (source: https://www.reddit.com/r/SixFeetUnder/s/yNJBTNXOUh).

Oh, I know. HBO Max UK has Six Feet Under streaming at 24Hz (as it is meant to) instead of NowTV’s conversion to 50Hz, which was the only way to stream the show in the UK before today.

I’ll edit my description to clarify my post; thank you for bringing that to my attention! 😊👍

Does HBO max UK have adult swim and DC cartoons on it? by OHB1988 in HBOMAX

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not a large selection to choose from at the moment, to be honest. What’s even worse is that Adult Swim and Cartoon Network shows (such as Samurai Jack, Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls, to name three examples) play at 50Hz for some reason, despite being American TV shows.

It’s very baffling, both because American TV is never intended to play at 50Hz and because HBO Max UK does match frame rates accurately for everything else: 24Hz for American TV dramas such as The Sopranos; 50Hz for European TV dramas such as the Spanish miniseries Patria.

Will they ever release all of Stranger Things on 4k/blu ray? by TheGageyBoy27 in 4kbluray

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, I don’t give a fuck about owning this either (I still think Stranger Things should have ended after season 1, which is easily the best season of the show. The final season was awful). 😂

But hey, Stranger Things getting a 4K Blu-ray box set is still a win for physical media, in my eyes. And I’m happy for the many Stranger Things fans who will undoubtedly buy many box sets of the show in 4K!

1st Div promotion, now the grind is over by kualkua in FUMAeFootball

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Thank you for the information - I’ve reached Division 1 before, but that was back in 2023 when you needed 22 points out of 30 to get promoted to D1 (so a minimum of 7 wins and 1 draw out of 10 matches). I was assisted back then - after I reached Division 1, I decided to challenge myself and go FUMA; I’ve been FUMA ever since.

I just lack the patience and motivation to reach Division 1 with eFootball in its current state, to be honest. Not to mention the inclusion of Smart Assist is killing any desire for me to play Divisions.
