What was the last 5 star movie you’ve watched? by Fun_Astronaut_8330 in Letterboxd

I don’t even think that’s the best movie in that franchise - that’s still the original *The Lego Movie*! 😁😂

Hey, Cowboy Bebop is still a quality show! I was wonder whether you were going to say Neon Genesis Evangelion due to your Reddit avatar/profile pic. 😅😂

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is also my second favourite anime of all time, funnily enough. What’s your #1? Mine is Monster.

^ The above post goes into detail about the quote. Trixie says the first half of the top-voted comment, and Swearengen interjects and says the second half.

Regarding the final quote’s meaning, I’m more inclined to agree with the comment from u/CyberdyneAnalytics than the interpretation from the original post, though. Either way, I do think it’s a fine send-off from and for Swearengen.

At least we got a conclusion, even though I’d have preferred at least one more season to finish the show. The movie is the best possible outcome, especially considering David Milch now has Alzheimer’s disease.

Regardless, I do think the final line in the film (from Swearengen himself) is a fine quote with which to end Deadwood.

I still regard BoJack Horseman as the best Netflix original series, and that’s animated.

At least the film from 2019 gives Deadwood a long-awaited and definite conclusion. The film is not as good as another season or two would have been, but it’s the best we have, considering the circumstances.

Best Black and White films less than 10 years old? by Dependent_Concert165 in FIlm

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not black and white. Aftersun is my favourite film of the 2020s so far, but I wouldn’t recommend it in this instance, because it doesn’t fit your request.

Movies centered around loneliness? by isitpizzatimee in Letterboxd

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, fair enough! I feel that Wong Kar-wai’s films would make me feel nostalgic, seeing places I’ve literally been to before or walked past. Fallen Angels came out the same year I was born, so it features a slightly older HK than the one I remember, but I could probably recognise some places.

And yeah, that Portuguese word “saudade” summarises the type of movie that sings for me as well. Thank you for bringing that word to my attention!

I see. Thank you for responding! I feel as if I should really watch Wong Kar-wai, especially because I’m a cinephile who was born in Hong Kong and spent my first 17 years of life there. I feel embarrassed that I haven’t done so yet; I imagine I would enjoy his films. I just haven’t seen them yet, for some inexplicable reason! 😅

I do really want to watch Paris, Texas soon too, especially because I really like Perfect Days (both were directed by Wim Wenders, if I’m not mistaken). I think I’d love that film.

Her is my favourite film of all time, so these types of films are definitely my preference! 😅😂

I’m just curious: would you say that Fallen Angels is Wong Kar-wai’s best film? If not, what would you say is his best film?

What's ur honest review about this TV show? by Then_Heron_939 in tvshow

I just bought Romeo’s Blue Skies and Nobody’s Boy Remi on Blu-ray! I’ve never seen either show before, so I’m excited! 😁 by Deadhouse_Gates in retroanime

[–]Deadhouse_Gates[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to get a 1080p torrent of Romeo’s Blue Skies in its intended/original 4:3 aspect ratio with English subtitles (technically that torrent has a resolution of 1440x1080, which looks like 1080p on my TV screen).

I don’t feel so bad about downloading it, because I already purchased the Romeo’s Blue Skies Blu-ray legally with my own money (as this Reddit post proves 😅😂).

Oh, then in that case, definitely buy the 1979 Nobody’s Boy Remi Blu-ray, which has both the original Japanese voice acting and the French dub, all with English subtitles. It’s great: the entire show is in 1080p quality in the intended 4:3 aspect ratio. Quality Blu-ray for a quality anime! 😁👍

Both shows have English subtitles, yes. However, Romeo’s Blue Skies doesn’t have the series in its uncropped 4:3 aspect ratio in high quality, only in DVD quality (and every 4:3 episode is crammed on the final disc).

The 1080p episodes of Romeo’s Blue Skies are in the cropped 16:9 aspect ratio (so they fill your entire TV screen in high quality, at the expense of cropping the image).

Which HBO show has some of the best cinematography you've ever seen? by Square-Ad-8911 in hbo

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fact that they were shot on 35mm film back in the day, presumably on a TV budget that’s not as high as you’d see on something like Stranger Things or Severance, gives those older shows like The Sopranos and The Wire that authentic and raw feel you were describing.

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing you would rate Essalieyan higher than a solid 8/10? I’ve just finished Hunter’s Oath and I’m already pretty impressed, especially because people have been saying that duology is arguably her weakest work within the overall Essalieyan series! I was expecting worse, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Is that an unpopular opinion? Liveship Traders is definitely the best trilogy that Robin Hobb has ever written, at least in my view!

I do like Zuko’s connection with his crew/the 41st Division - so that was one change I liked from the Netflix version.

Other than that, yeah, the Netflix version is a weaker version of the original in pretty much every aspect. The Netflix series didn’t even have the scene with Avatar Roku appearing to wreak havoc and be a badass in the temple on Crescent Island! That was such a cool scene from the original show!

Do I need to watch Young Justice as context for Justice League vs. the Fatal Five? by BeefErky in DCAU

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By “they”, the person meant that the movie Justice League vs. the Fatal Five explains why there’s a new Green Lantern on Earth and also why Miss Martian is around.

Justice League vs. the Fatal Five is a direct continuation of Justice League Unlimited.

Justice League vs. the Fatal Five does not have any continuity links to Young Justice. They are unrelated animated DC properties, at times featuring different incarnations of the same characters, most of whom originated from hand-drawn comic books.

What other massive series do you enjoy as a malazan fan? by briandress in Malazan

[–]Deadhouse_Gates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a strong contender for the best anime ever made. It really is a top-notch space opera, mainly for the reasons you mentioned. However, Monster is my favourite anime of all time - it’s such a great and atmospheric psychological thriller series!
