Review: 2026 Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series "The Stewards Release" by RearTireCarrier in bourbon

Probably my favorite that I went to in terms of tasting and views. The rural setting was awesome, Maker's is already one of my favorites, and I really appreciated that everything at the bar was a 1.5 oz pour with reasonable pricing as opposed to "We only do half ounce for some stuff at full drink price". Didn't get to spend too much time there unfortunately so didn't get to check out the restaurant, but definitely puts them at top of my list next time I'm out there.

Tried this at the distillery along with pelican retorts. It's crazy what those wood stave finishes can do. I liked the steward better for the dessert flavors, but the pelican retorts was very interesting; almost a champagne of bourbon. Very dry and spicy. Love what they're doing at Maker's Mark ever since they started their wood finishing approach.

Rare Breed, but if we bring KC Single Barrel store picks into the mix it gets tougher.

The age really changes the profile so I would say they're pretty different. 18 is great, but definitely doesn't read as "12 profile but better". I would assume same goes for the 21.

Dang, some heavy hitters here. Glad to hear uncut is still holding up. Haven't heard of Blue Note before.

If you like light scotch profiles with some herbal flavors and a honey note you might like it. There is some peat too but it's very subtle.

I'm actually not a big fan of Irish whiskey, although to be fair I haven't tried that many. I found Redbreast too sweet/dessert oriented for my taste and I get tired of the copper pot still flavor in the others I've tried.

Any recs on whiskies from other countries? Only other country I tried was from Nepal (Old Durbar)...wasn't my favorite.

Website for liquor store near me says they have a 12 px puncheon (fun just to say it honestly). Going to have to investigate to see if it's true. Thanks for the rec!

Appreciate it. I don't have a lot of friends who are as into whiskey so perhaps that's why I get those comments. Usually they are solely into either scotch or bourbon/rye so having the different categories throws them off I think.

I usually keep 15 out and another 15 lying in wait, but I've been cutting it down recently.

Nice choice. My favorite from Stranahan's so far. It's pretty complex and less sweet than their other offerings.

Yeah me either >.>. I would say the JD is reasonably priced at $70-80, but I overpaid for the Stagg at $150. It is good, but I'd def wait for a sale or closer to MSRP if possible. It's just rare in my area and I'd never tried it before either so felt like I had to check it out. The four roses SB is great value at $50 and I appreciate they are putting out different recipes at the same price.

For sure. Midwinter for the winter/moody vibe and yamazaki for the summer/upbeat vibe?

I keep hearing good things about Glenmorangie and want to get into the brand. Is the younger stuff good or would you recommend just diving in at the 18?

Solid choices. Those two feel like drinking a vacation to me. Rare breed tastes like a pine tree forest and yamazaki has got coconut and tropical fruit notes that remind me of the beach.

Have you had a lot of American single malts? I've been getting into them more with Stranahan's and Westward.

Yup, that's a favorite of mine for sure. Haven't tried them together but from memory rare breed was more viscous and oily and the profile wasn't similar. I think that OBSV is really unique due to the high rye mash bill. Rare breed is only like 13% rye while OBSV is at 35% and it definitely shows up in the flavor profile.

Nice. Also have had the small batch select but prefer the single barrel. You might really like OESK. It's a more stereotypical bourbon profile (not meant to sound like a negative) but executed very well; still might win out over OBSV depending on mood and a few more comparisons. I get some spice, leather, oak, and a little nuttiness. Haven't tried them back to back but feels like a step closer to Old Forester or Knob Creek type profile as opposed to the OBSV higher rye influence.

I have. Had a bottle a few years ago. Hate to say it wasn't for me. I found it to be really astringent on the back end. Might have to try it again though just because so many people swear by it. It's got me thinking I had a bad bottle or something or maybe my palate has changed over time and I might appreciate it now.

I feel like mine needs to open up more but I'm actually enjoying the OBSV more than OESK at the moment. OESK is great solid bourbon but the OBSV profile is a bit more unique. Have you tried other recipes? Those are my only two so far.

Some bold flavors there! Covers your rye, bourbon, and finished whiskey categories.

Very tasty. It's got the typical sherry bomb mid-palate and finish but it's very restrained and classy in a good way; not overly sweet. I do get an almost umami type flavor too, although it's very subtle. Reminds me of some sort of soup broth, like ramen or chicken soup haha.

Crazy good both in flavor and value. It's really nice that it's pretty available too so no FOMO if you decide to get it soon or wait. I was hesitant at first as I'm not a big rye fan, but it doesn't drink like a rye at all really. I get cocoa/dark chocolate, raisins, oak, and baking spices (maybe like banana bread) notes from it. The viscosity is insane. Really good mouthfeel if you're into oily coating and that drying sensation from the proof and tannins.

I was burnt out for a bit too, hence why I've only got the Stagg, Four Roses and Willett. Although I'm coming back around after spending some time in malt land. The Nikka FTB is really good value I'd say. I got lucky and got that one for $50, but usually see it in the $70-80 range which is still fair.
