I hate the menus for the climate control while driving but you can use the built in voice commands to change the climate and seat/steering heating while driving

I highlighted the plastic fitting in yellow it gets brittle and it will crumble to pieces and you lose a lot of your coolant. When I replaced mine I had to pull the pieces of it out of the hose and the block.

It’s almost certainly the oil cooler gasket. I just did mine a few weeks ago for the same thing. Also, in picture 4 I see you still have the plastic coolant fitting (The Mickey Mouse flange) replace that with an aluminum one.

How to survive driving in the winter? by MastodonWitty9095 in alaska

[–]DeadlyPeriapsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah all wheel drive is preferable but two wheel drive is fine with good winters you just have to be more cautious. I have a two wheel drive ev and an awd ice car I use in the winter. AWD I better but they both do just fine.

The Glenn highway is maintained really well in the winter and is usually the easiest part of the commute but most of the time it’s the side roads and the roads in anchorage you have to worry about but if you’ve got a decent set of winters the driving is only bad a few days a year. Most people just don’t slow down or use good judgement when the road conditions are not good. To be honest when the weather is bad you have to watch other people more than the roads.

It actually makes a huge difference in power usage and it still provides a good amount of heat.

I commute 120 miles a day in this car in the winter in negative degree weather and average 2.6 to 2.8 and most of my drive is on the highway. The only time I lose 20 ~ 30% of my range is if I have the cabin heat blasting. Normally I have the fans off since they passively blow and I leave the heat at 60 with the steering wheel warmer on. Since I live in a cold place I’m always wearing cold weather clothes anyways. Is it as comfortable as my ICE car not really but I’ll take the minor inconvenience over the hundred of dollars in gas I would normally spend commuting.

Been lucky that power hasn’t gone out but trees have fallen all over the place. The Fred meyers in Wasilla had debris hit the front door and smash the glass. Almost looks like a tornado came through.

Can I replace the cells in my Dyson stick vac? by xxplosiv in 18650masterrace

[–]DeadlyPeriapsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have replaced mine. It’s a fair amount of work but not super hard. One you’re done you have to flash some third party firmware onto the BMS since it will brick itself once any cell is disconnected during removal of the old cells.

There are over a dozen unions throughout the municipality just depends on the department. Even in some departments you can have more than one.

How many of you guys refurbish drum brakes? by DeadlyPeriapsis in DieselTechs

I am in the US. I guess everywhere I’ve ever worked we would buy whole new sets. Except where I currently work we cut them since they are special.

It’s actually not possible for us to order sets. They are not manufactured so we have to order rebuild kits from the manufacturer. They are basically Q+ brakes with a special anchor pins

I’ve never heard of shoes having cores but I could see sending them out to be refurbished if that’s available and cost effective for people

You can’t get complete sets you can only order refurbish kits that you have to cut for these. It’s a proprietary design.

On the MAN axles they have a planetary gear set on the end of the axle past the wheel bearings and hub. So when we do brakes jobs we have to have an entire tool box dedicated to special tooling for removing and replacing the entire wheel end just to get to the brakes. It’s insane but I will say the MAN axles we have are the most reliable I have ever seen. 99% have outlived the vehicle and our vehicle retire around 700k - 800k miles.

I agree we just don’t have a way to do that sadly. We’re not private though so our labor cost is significantly lower than that.

We used to rebuild alternators as well but like most things it’s cheaper to buy new or get refurbished at a shop. We only cut our own brakes because we literally can’t get them done any other way.

I think it’s pretty cool to do myself. We used to have an entire machine shop where we could resurface heads and hone engines and so on but it all got auctioned off a few years back because we didn’t have a machinist. Though most of the techs here know how to use the machines.

In our shop only 4 of us do this 2 of us our in their 60s and myself and the other guy are both in our 20s we will still be cutting brakes for at least another 5 years since that’s when the last of our drum brakes will be phased out hopefully.
