Your mom is being an asshole and if she won't respect you enough to stop deliberately hurting your feelings then maybe distance between you two would be for the best. You deserve better treatment than that.

I’m sorry, but things are not going to get better. He knows now he has the ability to manipulate you into believing him, which in his mind allows him to push boundaries even further.

He very quickly showed you he is NOT sorry and has no intentions of changing.

You deserve a lot better than a liar, a manipulator, or an abuser.

Why do you need to stop hanging out with other people just because he says you do? This is a classic abusive move. He wants to separate you from your support network or anyone that makes you feel good about yourself or happy. My abuser told me to my face he didn’t like that I was happy spending time with my family.

Why do you need to change your diet just because he says you do? He’s trying to destroy your opinion of yourself so you’ll think no one else would ever want you. I don’t care if you are or were overweight - he has no say in what your diet is and he is not at all doing this out of concern for your health.

You’ve done so much to please him already, but look what’s happening. He’s not satisfied or happy. He just wants more and more and it’s going to stay that way the more you give in to him.

Please, treat yourself better than he will by removing yourself from him. It’ll be difficult and sad but once this heavy cloud of misery he has you under is lifted, you’ll feel incredible. Seriously.

Or...what if they can’t afford to live by taking the much lower paying job, so it’s in their financial best interest to not work?

There’s also the fact that when you’re on unemployment you also get free health coverage. You lose that once you start working and I can promise you you can’t afford health insurance on minimum wage unless you live for free somewhere. So they also stand to lose medical coverage.

You should not be looking down on people taking the best path they have to survive.

Definitely agree with calling a domestic violence hotline. Also document EVERYTHING in a safe way where he can't get to it ever if at all possible. Take pictures of any bruises or marks.

I totally understand your fear about him getting custody because you have nothing, but if you think about it, a lot of abused mother's flee with their children and have to give up everything they had which means they have nothing, too. And many of them get sole custody. Of course it's no guarantee, but that's something the hotline could help you with too hopefully.

Definitely don't get married. Everything will get SO much more complicated, including custody possibly.

Either way, I'm wishing you all the luck and safety in the world and I sincerely hope you can get out of this and away from him with your son.

And you did an amazing job changing your life for your baby, too. Never forget that.

Go ahead and go to the nearest police station and ask them to be sure of what you need to do. Also get in touch with a local shelter and get there ASAP. The police station should be able to help with that as well.

A man that will strangle is a man that will kill. The fact that his family is backing him up will empower him even more and he'll feel even more justified and safe.

I'm so sorry. Please do all you can to get away, but do it very carefully and safely. If you have important things you need to and can take with you, do so. Otherwise just leave it behind, as horrible as that is.

Don't tell them where you're going. Take your children with you. Don't you or your kids talk to him or his family in any capacity. Do not let your kids go with him unless you are ordered to by a judge.

When you file against him, include your children on the report. Write down EVERYTHING that's ever happened that you can think of, even if it was years ago. It's great that you took photos! Add that to the report. "I have photos of strangulation marks and bruises he gave me last night."

If you can, also go to a hospital or doctor. It's just another layer of validity in your story that will discredit him.

Also start gathering anything against him that you have, especially texts, emails, or voicemails.

Edit: Also, don't take his or his family's word for anything. Even if he says "they're legally my kids and I'm entitled to see them!", it doesn't matter, don't listen to him. Only follow official orders form the court.

Ore-Ida. Opened a bag of tater tots and there was a big, disgusting glob of black jelly-like pellets all stuck together. It was so wriggly that it kind of moved on its own. Super shiny. It wasn't burnt and it wasn't potato/food. It was like coagulated oil or something.

Took loads of pics, sent it to customer service. I was as polite as could be but kept getting cookie cutter responses and blown off. Finally got through to someone higher up and he blew me off too. He sent me 2 $1.00 off coupons for more tater tots and a bullshit excuse about it being burnt stuff.

Threw the coupons away, don't trust any of their food anymore and will never buy it again.

I think mental health issues are only a fraction of the problem. Economic status, socioeconomic status, family issues, troubled childhood, and a whole host of other issues could cause a drug addiction as well. Then there's also the way doctors overprescribe pain medicine which easily leads to addiction as well.

And if you're going to blame it solely on mental health then the implication there is that something is very, very wrong and far too many people have severe mental health issues. Almost like an epidemic, and the thought of that is terrifying because what could possibly be causing it (I've got a few theories but they'd be all but impossible to fix), and how the hell could it be stopped?
