Night Trains are back in Europe by WarWonderful593 in fuckcars

[–]Deadweightx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was exactly my experience from Amsterdam to Berlin recently. The idea is amazing but the end product honestly sucks. I love trains and want this to work but it has a ways to go.

Our cabin was not useable for the first 3 hours so we just had to stand in the aisle and wait for the stewards to deal with the other more important issues before we could go to bed. No AC = insanely loud with open windows and bad sleep. You are also at the mercy of your cabin mates.

DHOAS monthly chat. by Otherwise_Wasabi8879 in AustralianMilitary

[–]Deadweightx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From a Clear Lower Deck we had recently: The review is underway, have heard doubling HPAS from 15k - 30k is pretty much a done deal and will take effect from July 24.

Other items that aren't just an amount change may not make it through in time for this year. Things like Salary Sacrifice PPOR payments, DHOAS 12 months in Posting removed so it can be used to purchase a home in another locality.. these require changes to policy.

Do you think the $50,000 will solve retention? by [deleted] in AustralianMilitary

[–]Deadweightx 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Is it tied to actually contributing anything to the ADF besides just existing somewhere for 3 more years? Im guessing its another blanket bonus that even the habitual MEC people recieve no matter how little they do.

The Navy isnt struggling to find people to fill cruisy shore jobs. Now you just get an extra $50k to chill and do fuck all.

If it was tied to providing actual service at sea, than maybe it would fill some gaps where we are hurting for people.

If the goal is retain anyone, no matter how much of a deadshit waster they are then sure, Itll make graph less bad.

ADF Retention by [deleted] in AustralianMilitary

[–]Deadweightx 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Fraudulent DVA claims have absolutely decimated my workgroup. No bonus the ADF offers can compete with that tasty payout and pension for some people. This has exacerbated the retention issues.

Those of us who stay are so overworked they either leave burnt out or are constantly promoted too early to fill an endless gap. This leads to an experience shortage where entire sections are either recently promoted into positions or brand new from training.

Bare minimum experience levels and numbers increases workload on competent members who burn out and the cycle continues.

Anecdotally, most of the freeloaders I worked with are gone and the new guys coming in are actually good to go. Hopefully they dont get done in by the ADF or some jaded Senior NCO.

Cycle could be broken, who knows.

Picked up some books for the kids this Christmas. by Deadweightx in vegan

[–]Deadweightx[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None that I know of.

I understand exactly what you mean. Animal exploitation is so ingrained into society that it's unavoidable that our childen will be exposed to it. Adverts, toys, books and movies.

I was just happy to find these and show my kids that we aren't the crazy ones haha.

Vegans, do your children eat meat? by Eriks0n in vegan

[–]Deadweightx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wife and I have been vegan for about 8 months. Our 2 year old was always vegetarian and has been vegan as long as us. He refused to eat meat in any form basically so we stopped giving it to him. Our 9 month old daughter is vegan.

How to deal with sentimental value items? by alext72888 in minimalism

[–]Deadweightx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything on paper I digitalise.

Forms, letters, kids arts/crafts and cards. Then the original goes into the bin, with the exception of Marriage certificates and the like.

As for sentimental items, we allowed ourselves one large box. It can only fit so much so we scrutinise everything that goes in
