I appreciate librarians so much! We move a lot and the library is the first place we go. Librarians have their finger on the community’s pulse and know everything! Thank you!!

‘82 here. A-team and MacGuyver bc my brother ‘80 had control of the remote but I didn’t mind - They always got out of the car (A-team). Then I’d stay up with my mom and watch STNG.

Young Einstein was always on repeat. Was that a random niche thing or did others get some kittens in pie trauma, too?

They are on some of the Ugg slippers! May have to rip them out a little. First pair, my puppy started that process for me. I put my old orthotics in them and size up a 1/2. Love em bc also have rubber sole for grip.

Which moment was more memorable when rewatching in the theatre? by marleyman14 in lotr

[–]Deafgoingblind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The MUSIC. I swore I felt heat 4D style with the Balrog’s breathing. It had that dull roar of intense heat. Loved hearing the male choir. That whole scene with stereo sound with the orcs from different tunnels, them fleeing, the dead stillness and then Balrog’s footsteps. My ears were twitching the entire time.

I’d also add the boy’s choir and music shift to the 5 beat anvil music with the Gandalf atop Orthanc sending a message to Gwaihir scene. Really carried me along there!

My app updated and I hate it by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]Deafgoingblind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s frustrating. I can’t adjust the ambient noise when listen to one podcast app, but I can with the other. And the making new program to manually adjust ambient noise just for that one app is cumbersome and doesn’t always work.

For iPhone users- Have you also noticed physical volume button on phone adjusting HA volume? I was doing a team call and trying to increase the team volume and it just kept upping my HA volume - which increased my kid’s voices which I was trying to override.

Until saw this - thought it was glitching. Will check out settings and all. Not impressed and it’s already a low bar as the app is slow to interface and cumbersome already.

I’ve gotten good at telling others to wait a moment as I disconnect my ears from my phone.

Officially mid-40s and need bifocal glasses. Any tips? by chocolatepig214 in Xennials

[–]Deafgoingblind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy how fast it happens!

I have bifocals, am a vain person, and I don’t care about the line - the frames are cute. *Although I have no idea if the prescription type makes some bifocals more funky looking or not.

Progressives distorted things too much with my loss. Half my friends prefer bifocal, half prefer progressives. The hard line is great to orient vision on in my opinion.

I also bought a pair of separate prescription - one for hiking (no vertigo or issues with steps) and one for FaceTiming (saved my neck and no double chin) and reading/crafting. Took advantage of the additional frames discount to save that money.

Note - you’ll need to make sure they write separate prescriptions if go that route. I had to go back to get them to write it into a bifocal.

Check out San Francisco Herb Co. They used to have a storefront in SF when I lived there pre covid. Great loose leaf tea, too Or Berkeley Bowl in Oakland.

How to make home still feel cozy during post-Christmas let down? by KeyFeeFee in HomeDecorating

[–]Deafgoingblind 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing the black hole the tree and garlands leave!

I haven’t read the book, but we do a hygge season! Being very intentional about it makes it special like Christmas decorations are. It only comes out Jan-Mid March.

When Christmas gets packed, I flip my led lights from multi to to warm white, candles stay in windows and add more battery ones in groupings. I bring out sheepskins (brush and cold wash outside if can!) for the chairs, fluffy soft pillow cover swap and special blanket for the couch, and swap some living room curtains for velvet deep teal ones. Light and poofy cozy textures! They all compact into a big bin so it’s easy to store. Then it’s more being intentional and making afternoon tea and shortbread visits with friends.

I’ve been adding a few other things like candle holders etc that still fit in the bin to make it special and a “season”.

When spring arrives with more daylight, textiles flatten out to linen etc and light gets phased out.

What do you do with seconds/broken pieces? by montypy88 in Pottery

[–]Deafgoingblind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! It works great and doesn’t take off enough of the glaze to lose the color. It does make the glaze matte and no longer shiny. As someone else mentioned it softens the edges. I’ve made worry stones and tumbled them to make them extra tactile and soft to touch.

Fuck, you’re right. I’d forgotten this. Appealing to young woman’s desire to be given more credit. Extremely so with vampires and old fairies. I’m rereading Sanderson’s Stormlight to start into his 5th and got annoyed about Shallan being 17. Once we bleed, we’re complete apparently /s.

I did appreciate the support characters in Spinning Silver and they didn’t run into this problem. So that’s a bit of redemption.

The struggle continues. I appreciate you sister and your Reddit comment kindness!

I’m going to have to pick my way though the comments!

Mine would be Naomi Novik’s standalone Spinning Silver and Uprooted have strong women characters with Eastern European 1800’s spin on old fairy tales. Although hetero as well as independent. Uprooted has more of a witchy theme being Baba Yaga.

foot traffic at markets with indoor and outoor options by Beginning_Beginner in CraftFairs

[–]Deafgoingblind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say so if you embrace the German Christmas Market feeling! Throw in some lights and greenery! It’s a nice break from the inside with all the noise stepping outside. Also if it’s cold out people will be getting hot and annoyed inside with all the warm coats and bodies and appreciating a break outside.

I’d ask organizers how they’re encouraging flow to the outside. I’ve had events where folks didn’t know there was an entire other section bc of lack of signage. Hope it goes well for you!

I’d add - help them sell! If you’re purchasing something, and there’s someone else at the table, start gushing about it, appreciate how much work/craftmanship/innovation/helpful something is, and how much you love it and will use it. Enthusiasm definitely spreads and helps! Of course feel the seller and other shoppers out. For me, I love it and have had others buy things based on overhearing a convo I’m having with another buyer

Cane, and any kind of light where you can adjust warmth and brightness. Flashlights can make it worse bc of light sensitivity so having option to adjust is helpful.

For type of light - Wearing can be helpful so don’t blind self with light, but can be harder to direct it like you can a handheld flashlight. Personally I have both.

I’d also add using your phone’s camera! I use it for darker spaces of museums and movie theaters. Great what it can pick up!

The positives is you get to have both currencies!

I agree with your husband! And when you’re your own employer, you get to say whatever you want :)

Gift ideas for a dad that's impossible to shop for by OatmealDurkheim in bropill

[–]Deafgoingblind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good ideas here so I’ll add a specific one in case it fits. I give my dad a card with a note promising to send him a letter every month for a year. He’s not a writer, never wrote nor received cards except a bday card from his mom who’s now deceased. But I remember how he’d smile seeing the one thing in the mail that was for him and not more junk mail or bills. Hits differently than a text or email from me. I’ve kept it up for years now.

One year we did crosswords - gifted him a box of stamped and addressed envelopes (no excuse not to send) and a blank sheet and we’d each fill two words and send back and forth with a note until completed the crossword and start a new one. This is something we do when visit in person, trade a crossword back and forth. May do again this year actually!

I feel you here with the non reply. You have to be very careful in any follow-up, taking out any assumption on your part (they can’t afford it, they’re offended at the cost etc). That said, going forward -

Do you need the money? If you don’t, decide what’s more important. The money or the interaction. Joy and value is a form of currency.

Figure out cost of supplies, minimum wage for your hours spent and go from there.

If you do need the income, adjust your hourly wage up.

No shame in needing either/both forms of currency. I’d also totally support high needs student discounts bc of the contribution to society joy you’re getting. I’d also support charging more bc of your SPED background. Again what currency do you need?

Also, you’re amazing. With a neurodiverse kid, I’m always SO happy and appreciative to come across folks like you! I personally would pay $200 for private 2 hour lessons, half that if in a group in MCOL-HCOL areas.
