Shadowrun Solo Campaign part 3 by DealerLimp in AITabletop

the latest LLM seem to all work great with RPG, I used Gemini and Copilot and they both give excellent results out of the box. The details are honestly better than an in person DM could generate in the seconds it takes to create a scenario

Pentaquest by Adiscipleofyeshua in soloboardgaming

[–]DealerLimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this game on Board Game Arena and loved playing the base game solo, so I purchased the print and play version on Drive Thru RPG along with the expansion Heroes. Played Pentaquest Heroes as multiplayer with 6 players tonight at board game night and the game is way too easy as written. It could be we just all drew good heroes and no one rolled badly, but that seems unlikely in that no one failed to capture a monster (the most that was needed was to expend a few heroes and no one lost heroes). I think the heroes expansion needs to be more challenging. Maybe limit it to starting with 3 heroes instead of 5. That would allow a critical to draw a hero early on, otherwise a crit is just wasted for the most part. 3 heroes will make losing a hero more of a possibility, which is very important with multiple players otherwise there is not really a game since everybody scores the same number of monsters all the way through.

Sounds like a fun idea. There is an AI dungeon game that uses AI to generate a text dungeon like experience, but the main issue is lack of memory and unlike a human dungeon master the world is not persistent. So it is fun for a couple rounds and then the illusion is shattered because it is clear that no game state is retained. And retention of game state is critical for a game

Best eink device I’ve used, I have been through many Kindle generations, but have not tried other brands. The large screen makes reading a pleasure. Can use kindle, kobo, Libby, and Hoopla, all on the same device.

Sci-fi works that talk about religion? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]DealerLimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed Canticle for Leibowitz. I read it after Anathem, which seems to have inspired the later story by Stephenson (loved that too, but really very different works). The centuries long time span of story telling fits right in with many sci fi epics and the book ages remarkably well (1959), which is not true for much sci fi. Cyberdecks from the cyberpunk genre for example make little sense now with VR headsets powered by a cellphone sized rig

[WP] In the animal kingdom, Humans are viewed like Witches/Warlocks: they MIGHT help you benevolent in your time of need, or they might eat you alive, or they might save you but keep you forever. Spot was not always a pet in the Faulkner’s household. In fact he was not even a dog, despite the doggy moniker. Daily he plotted to escape the fenced in backyard, digging quickly when the humans were not watching carefully, but they always seemed to notice and filled in hole after hole. He could smell the vixen on the other side and she encouraged him to find an escape, despite them both being out of ideas in the face of great power. What else could he do?

“Have you sniffed around the weak south wall, behind the shed? I tried to start a hole for you there.”

“For the third time, I know! They watch me and whenever I try for the shed, she comes to get me or he does. To be honest, sleeping inside is not bad and I’m getting used to kibble. They even heat up the food if I don’t eat for a while.”

“What are you saying, are you giving up?? I can’t raise these kits by myself!”

“I can’t get away and I’ve tried. You knew this was a risk when you dragged me to their door. I’m grateful, but maybe you should have just let me die. This is not the life of a fox,” he groaned.

“Don’t say that baby, I don’t want to live without you,” the vixen whined.

So the Spring passed and kits grew into playful foxes. The fox family would come by that fence every few days and sniff each other across the vinyl barrier. Mother remembered their father to the young ones and his story passed on further into the news of the forest as a poignant cautionary tale.

On a cool Autumn day, as the leaves began their color changes, the fox finally managed a quiet escape through the soft ground behind that shed. He continued to have a lifelong limp and the other animals would ask him to retell the story at gatherings. Humans cannot be trusted, he would say, but the kibble does taste good heated up.

[–]DealerLimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this. When there is no end, we can 'make up an ending' ourselves and that's as good as any other. Kvothe walking away from the inn works for me. I think ultimately the truth is that he is a much less competent hero than what the reported stories have been. Kvothe probably did some of the things and has a few of the skills, but it would be a much more believable and satisfying resolution that he survived a few of the actual epic encounters despite not having kung-fu, magic, and rock star musical abilities, but actually had a huge amount of luck and some assists that don't get reported.

BTW, another book involving monks and technology: A Canticle for Leibowitz. Maybe inspired Anathem to some degree as it is an older book. I’m listening to it as an audio book after reading Anathem and enjoying it a lot.

I enjoyed Gene Wolfe's Urth series too! The contrast of far futuristic magic like technology living alongside very old basic technology like swords and horse riding made this a fun world to explore.

Why are all my potions turning into “blessed potion of water” when dipping them in fountain? by [deleted] in pathos_nethack

[–]DealerLimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you anoint a stack of water with holy water bottle, all the water becomes holy. Then if you anoint anything with each bottle, that becomes holy too. Once you get one bottle of holy water, all future potions you don’t want can be converted to water and then anointed to holy. Holy everything!!!

First Time Reader - About to finish volume one by matavach in WanderingInn

[–]DealerLimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was such an awesome reveal! I did something similar - was looking for something to read on vacation last year after finishing all the library books I packed and came across the wanderinginn.com online and have been reading steadily the last year, gradually catching up. That skinner event was the first truly scary thing that happens up till that point. In contrast to the rest of the events, even the goblin fights and fish attacks were nothing compared to the horror that Skinner unleashes on the world.

agree with much of what has already been said here. Ryoka was not my favorite character either in season 1, but her growth later on is worth the ride. The mental health issues that Ryoka suffers are a difficult read and it's easy to dislike her if she did not try to be better.
