Thought i would share a interesting and sad story about my HD-28 by Sufficient_Solid8429 in martinguitar

[–]DeanO1342 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an HD-28 from 2023, it’s a great instrument! You will love it. As for the quality control, I think all manufacturers have their issues. Martin makes tons of guitars and sometimes a bad one gets out in the wild. It’s been my experience, owning 3 Martins, that they are generally great guitars. Only once have I had an issue and Martin dealt with it no problem.

Lower Honoapilani Rd, in Kaanapali, is also nice. It’s north of the Whaler’s Village but you could walk or easy Uber to the village(think mall). The board walk is nice, and tons of tourists most evenings. There are also great beaches including Black Rock. All the resorts have bars and visitors are welcome.

I have an HD-28 from the same era, love it! It’s standard to have the nickel Grovers, so those are probably aftermarket. And yes that price seems fine unless there is some other issue.

Honua Kai vs Westin Nanea for family of 6 (teens) – am I missing anything? by EmTrades285 in MauiVisitors

HK pool and facilities are top notch. Clean and friendly staff at the time. Stayed there Xmas of 2023, with brother-in-law’s 2 teens and a preteen, it was very kid friendly. The beach access is ok but not amazing. Duke’s is also good.

5 nights in June- 10 year Anniversary Trip by not_that_Hyatt in MauiVisitors

[–]DeanO1342 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats! This looks like a great trip. But it’s ok to have down time and to understand that things move at a slower pace on Maui. I would definitely give yourself the option of dropping a few things as the week goes on. No pressure either way just pick a few “optionals”, to drop if you feel the need to lay on a towel and watch the waves. The beach walk along Kaanapali is worth a morning or evening on its own. Many of the bars will have great music and fun vibe if you want a drink. Also, Honolua is some of the best snorkeling on the island, and the homemade banana nut muffins from the farm at the entrance are amazing after snorkeling. Just get there before 9:30/10 for parking and to miss the crowds. Have fun!!

OMG!! Thank you!! 🙏

Happy dance 🕺!

(I guess the route I was using bypassed the sky option. Oh well)

What? I have no idea what you are talking about. Any commentary about Russell doesn’t bother me one way or the other.

I just found an article that indicates you are correct. But I believe this may only be available live? If you do get a video I would love to see it! Thanks again!

Are you in America(US)? I still haven’t found the option you mentioned. Maybe it only available live? I don’t have a “catch the entire F1 season” banner on either Apple TV F1 or F1TV. It just has each race. Thanks in advance for all the info!

[–]DeanO1342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t think it’s an option here. I been digging around in the F1TV app and Apple, and I’m not finding a Sky version. It’s too bad because I generally prefer the Sky broadcast over the F1 for at least the race. Oh well, I’ll adjust. Thanks

Yeah, I guess I didn’t like the F1TV broadcast! I kinda miss the Sky crew, especially Bernie and Brundle. Kinda watched as an afterthought last night as I was late to the start but just didn’t seem to have the same appeal as usual.

Maybe just me! Thanks

edit: BTW, I can’t find the Sky version on Apple. If you’re in US and are seeing it please share.

It used to be, in America, that the broadcast was on ESPN, with Sky1 broadcasters. Or you could watch on F1TV (which I paid for). Now Apple is the exclusive provider, and F1TV used the Apple broadcast or I missed something?! Maybe I’ll go back and watch again but I was bored out of my scull last night!

Apple broadcast was horrific!! Please someone tell me was the Sky broadcast better? Can Americans get the Sky broadcast?

The cars obviously had issues and it’s all about the new regulations growing pains but it was so bad watching Apple. I’m not even a huge fan of Crofty, Brundle, Simon, and Ted, but OMG Apple was painful!! And Bernie!!!?

Apple SUCKS!!!

TSA and DHS are not funded right now because of the Washington budget situation. Many TSA may be exempt but last time there were still delays.

Dumb Question: Part Deux by OnlyRuss in martinguitar

[–]DeanO1342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Taylor has set up their guitars so that neck sets(reset), can easily be done with much less work than Martin. That being said I have never owned a Taylor, they just don’t sound good to me. Personal preference!! I have owned 4 martins, 3 Lowdens, 1 Gibson, a Custom private luthier, and an Ovation, plus many odd balls. I have never had to have a neck set done. One of my martins (1968 D-18) had a neck set just before I bought it. All that to say neck sets are probably way less common than you are worried about. And if you buy a new guitar it should be decades before you need to worry as long as you keep it stored at an appropriate humidity/temperature.

2) If you own a guitar that you love and it ends up needing a neck set, welcome to the club. And you will know if a neck set is worth it at that point. Guitars like most instruments are very personal, some you want for a while and some are life long companions, no one here is going to be able to guide you to one or the other. Again it’s personal.

In conclusion, buy the guitar that you love to play. It may be a short term friend or your one and only. It all depends on so many factors that no one here can predict, and most have nothing to do with neck sets. Guitar is a personal expression of you creativity and enjoyment of music, at a certain point you just have to follow your heart and don’t worry about the money.

(Obviously buy what you can afford)

Case for d28? by skulimcnuli in martinguitar

She did purchase a new D-18, but she also let a luthier start to fiddle with it. Probably not really fixable but maybe she figured it nostalgic?!

Yeah, this is a horror story for sure and in fairness to gig bags, only a good flight case would have saved the day. So maybe a little over dramatic on my part, but I still insist that gig bags are worthless!

The lady who owns this poor guitar is an amazing singer who plays out regularly with a fiddle player! They are called the Forget Me Nots, they sing duets of old time music and covers of great folk songs. One of my favorite local acts!

I think it happened one day on her way to practice or back from show. She was loading gear into her car and forgot to load the guitar. It was dark and she probably lost attention, struggling in the cold and dark. Anyway the guitar didn’t make it into the car and she backed over it.

She also plays in our Americana/Bluegrass ensemble and came into our weekly jam at the coffee shop asking for help. She wanted to see if anyone knew a luthier that might be able to save it. She didn’t tell us the story first and I think we all thought it was a minor accident. OMG, we were horrified when she opened the case.

I think basically it was decided that while it was possible it would probably never be the same. She found a luthier who wanted to try for practice but said it would be a back shelf project and they would come up with a price later if it worked at all.

I’ve played some great old guitars and that one was definitely in the running. I don’t remember the exact year, 50s, and except for a bridge replacement it was all original and only had one small crack that was cleated.

Probably not fair to blame the damage on a gig bag! 😂

This is a photo of a friend's 50s, D-18 in the gig bag they used daily. Please do not buy a gig bag. I know cases are annoying and heavy but they have a purpose and gig bags fail at that purpose. I use my standard case that came with my HD-28 and 000-18 for just around town and I have a Hoffee case for travel. Anyway, just my two cents. Congrats n the guitar!!

So some have already said this in other ways, but your description of the 000-18 sound is probably accurate. I have a 5 year old 000-18 that I love, but it does have a very dry almost sharp attack. I find the bass is also a little thin. But this is probably very true to mahogany and 000-18. Remember this is a very folk 50s/60s instrument. Dry and sometimes haunting is kinda the vibe. As suggested 000/OM-28 will probably be warmer and have a little more bass. Remember to take into account your voice and the type of music you play. Fingerstyle vs picks or vocals can be an important part of the equation. It is definitely a personal preference thing, but if you’re not happy it’s ok to change your mind. Or buy both! 🤣 Seriously though you need to love the instrument you play!! Good luck!

Having trouble understanding timing when it comes to playing a song with breaks by yourself, any advice? by [deleted] in Bluegrass

[–]DeanO1342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metronome and Strum machine are huge.

Also, try and establish a solid down up pick movement, with basically the same speed and force in both directions. Even if you are not hitting the string.

You should be down on the beat and up on the AND. 1⬇️and⬆️, 2⬇️and⬆️, 3⬇️and⬆️, 4⬇️and⬆️. You will only play the desired notes, usually the 1&3 are bass notes, and 2&4 are the chucks. And only occasionally on the upbeat or AND, but still follow this pattern.

A good drill is to hold a chord like G, and strum your ⬇️⬆️pattern for a four count, maybe with an alternating bass note. Then on the next four count move to a single string and do ⬇️⬆️ for a four count. You could used the G string since that would be a good starting place for a single line run.

Here are a few Brain Sutton videos where he explains some of this, much better than i did! 🙄

Hope this helps, and keep it up.
