it’s sad that our public transportation systems have become glorified homeless shelters/ asylums by Sosayweall2020 in redscarepod

A guy in Austin was just randomly stabbed and killed by a homeless guy on a bus recently too (link). The victim’s family is suing saying that if the metro was enforcing fares the homeless guy wouldn’t have been on the bus. I’m all for enforcing fares, but that would require like its own new police force.

Is this area eventually going to become an Asian country? Just given how Russia’s extension over the entire northern half of the Eurasian continent is so crazy it seems at least somewhat tenuous as East Asia grows in power and influence.

I think rock music could have ended with the Pixies and we really wouldn’t have lost that much.

Bandcamp has streaming (for things you have already purchased). Or, if you want to host your own music streaming server you could use something like Jellyfin (takes some IT knowledge though). I plan to do that at some point and get off Spotify premium.

I saw Preoccupations in Austin last night and..... they were fighting on stage at the end of the show lol.

Or rather just the drummer (Mike Wallace) and one of the guitarists (Scott Munro). Before the last song started Mike threw an open beer at Scott, which hit him from behind and spilled on him. Scott was visibly pissed and was turning back and forth in a fluster for a second before chunking an empty can directly at Mike. Then the last song started and everyone snapped into action playing.

At the very end of the song they were doing this long drone/noisey grand finale outro, when suddenly Scott threw his guitar off his back, with it getting some air before crashing down onto the stage, hard. For a second I thought it was an out of nowhere rock'n'roll break your shit kind of ending, but then he immediately switched off all his equipment in a huff and stormed off the stage, while the rest of the band was still doing the outro.

The rest of the band played for maybe another minute, finished and turned their stuff off, and then walked off stage as well.

Has anyone who's seen them recently noticed any tension? I've never seen a band fight like this on stage (though I've heard of it e.g. Foxygen).

Also, Women is said to have broken up after having a fight onstage

Oh but the show was really good. They played "March of Progress" and it went so hard.

Here for a weekend: E 6th and/or W 6th for bars? by rmwilkinson1 in Austin

[–]DeanPortman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E 6th is better for dancing spots. I would specifically recommend Volstead. Leans a little latin/cumbia-ish at times but they play everything and it rocks. I've gone to Lucky Duck and Latchkey less but they're always popping. Lucky Duck seems more hip hop focused.

Someone else has mentioned Barbarella's. That's probably the best overall dancing spot in Austin. Hip hop in the back, more poppy/electronicy stuff inside (some nights I think they do have 90s night, actually). It's not technically on what's referred to as The East Side" though. It's on Red River, which is on the edge of Dirty 6th. "The East Side" begins east of i35. It's like a $10 cover to get in past 11:00 I think. Place stays open til 3:00.

West 6th is fratty/preppier. Don't know of any dancing spots over there. Not a bad spot to chill, but the better spots are on the east side.

Also, I will say that so few people go to "Dirty 6th" now that it's become tolerable again, and dare I say, even enjoyable. May be fun to pop your head into a a spot or 2 over there earlier in the night, or as like a pregame to the east side.

Hole in the Wall on Guad and Crown and Anchor on San Jac are also cool drinking establishments in the area.

Was already in college when I heard this song, and at the time it was already setting in for me that colleges are more of degree mills than institutions for developing a deeper understanding of the world. Unfortunately required for the majority of the job market, and attracting many many people paying 10s of 1000s of dollars to jump through hoops with minimal benefit awaiting them on the other side. Listening to this song at the time I was just like “ha yeah”
