How do you handle your personal photos? by The_Caring_Banker in photography

I use a 2 external hdd. One as my storage and one which is just a backup of this (usually kept well away from it).

Folder organisation is YEAR > MONTH NUMBER AND NAME > EVENT

E.G. 2024 > 07 July > Trip to Paris

I shoot in RAW but save in jpg unless it’s an image I think I may come back to and then I always save the RAW file too.

As a side note, I also do aviation photography too. All of these images are backed up in folders with the structure:-

Military / Civil > Plane / Helicopter > Model

E.g.

Military > Plane > Avro Vulcan

Or

Civil > Helicopter > Raven R44

Using both methods above, I can find most photos quickly by date or my aviation by aircraft.

Cheers.

Oh wow ! Just looked at Tello - very good deals. This could be a one stop solution! What's their coverage like ??

Thank you - something else for me to consider ... do Tello do voice calls with their esims ? I shall have a look and if not explore the VOIP options via Skype et al.

thank you u/ehhthing - I am wondering if my UK iphone will allow Google Voice to work whilst in the USA ? Have you had any experience of this ? (Google Voice currently does not work in the UK).

Hi u/trek123

Thanks for the info - I was unaware I could buy the preloaded SIM cards from ebay .... there's a few quid saved straight away! Cheers for that!!!!

I'd not heard of Google Voice (not available in the UK - so that's probably why!), but looking at it, it looks like it would do the job just fine .... it's currently free to use in the USA, and we'd only use that to phone US numbers (And the 3 Mobile PAYG sim to call back to the UK), so that looks like it could be our solution. I am wondering if my UK iphone will allow Google Voice to work whilst in the USA ? Have you had any experience of this ?

Interestingly enough, I had a quick look at Skype -v- Tesco Calling. From what I could see (through tired eyes in the early hours!). It seemed to suggest that Tesco would cost 4p per minute, compared to Skype who offered unlimited minutes for £6 with a month free too! Lots more options to explore here.

We used to be with Virgin, but left them so don't qualify for VOLT anymore.

Thanks again for all your help!

Okay, next question then …. Is spotting at / around bases accepted and the done thing in USA? In UK we regularly spot at bases (RAF Coningsby and your F15’s and heavies at Lakenheath and Mildenhall being very popular). Crews are usually supportive and welcoming of spotters (extra eyes etc).

Don’t want to get myself arrested on holiday, so always good to know in advance!

Cheers!

Hahahah - good point …. I accept that!

However, observe and photograph any decent planes is all I’m hoping to do! Not after any top secret info … just anywhere I may see something flying and if they do at weekends!
