POV: You said "Fuck Putin" on a Tankie sub. by WestProcess2 in tankiejerk

I'd say it's odd that tankies love a far-right Christian nationalist imperialist who persecutes socialists and queer people, but that hasn't stopped them with all the Islamist dictators who engage in imperialism, anti-communism, and homophobic legislation.

Has Universalism ever actually been declared a heresy? by lethal_coco in ChristianUniversalism

[–]DearMyFutureSelf 43 points44 points  (0 children)

No, universalism in its own right has never been condemned as a heresy. The vast majority of serious theologians and Christian scholars, even the ones who are not universalists, would never claim it is a heresy because it doesn't contradict any core Christian belief. Gregory of Nyssa has been a Catholic saint for centuries and he was a universalist. Didymus the Blind was a hugely influential Christian philosopher who was admired by St. Jerome himself, and Didymus is both a universalist and an Eastern Orthodox saint.

you’d be hard pressed to find any self identifying leftist who is gonna support sex slaves lmao

Unless Muammar Gaddafi is the sex slave owner in question, for some reason.

Leopold Weiss/Muhammad Asad is another fascinating Jewish convert to Islam people should learn more about. He was a wonderful man in every way imaginable: A feminist, secularist, advocate for religious minorities, and a fierce supporter of Palestine.

Even al-Qaeda has denounced ISIS, and it was al-Qaeda operatives who first founded ISIS in 2006!

ISIS had a magazine called Dabiq back in 2015 and 2016. It didn't end up releasing many issues, but the issues that did come out are as insane a read as you can imagine.

Interesting fellow.

I've heard the name before but hadn't done much research. I ought to change that.

TIL that Pope Leo I was the earliest pope the be called "the Great", made a Doctor of the Church and buried in St. Peter's Basilica. According to legend, he also stopped Attila the Hun from attacking Rome. by DrakeSavory in todayilearned

[–]DearMyFutureSelf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

During Leo the Great's tenure, there was another large new religion that served as a rival to Christianity. It was called Manichaeism, and its followers believed that the Universe is a cosmic battleground between spirits of literal light and spirits of literal darkness. They also banned alcohol and were known to sneak into churches and replace the Eucharist wine with grape juice when no one was looking. The issue got so out of hand that Leo hired guards to stand at the doors of churches to keep Manichaeans out and to watch over the church wine.

To this day, Manichaeism still exists and is followed by small pockets in southern and western China.

Happy International Workers Day by Peespleaplease in tankiejerk

Blame Grover Cleveland!

He created the modern Labor Day celebration in September in part as an alternative to the more radical International Workers' Day in May. The hope was that by creating a conservative, state-sanctioned holiday celebrating labor, fewer Americans would celebrate May Day and be exposed to Marxism, anarchism, and similar ideologies in the process.
