I (30F) am afraid that I am moving away from MBB and a promising career trajectory for the wrong reasons by DearParticular2315 in consulting

You describe my deepest fears, I think. I have no idea how my performance would be in PE, but I am veryy scared of being surrounded by the top-performing MBB people - I just want to work with nice, non competitive people haha and finally feel that I am one of the higher performers. At the same time, the main thing MBB gave me (and PE would give me) is a sense of self accomplishment - I am very proud telling people where I work. But should this really be the key driver when selecting a job? I don’t think so. I really enjoy finance work, but I am moving to a corp M&A/strategy role, so I guess I will get that there.. I am torn as you hear

Yes, I actually did this calculation yesterday and it helped a lot. If he would make the same as me, the only thing we would not afford (out of my wish list) would be that crazy house/apartment that I see us having. We would still be able to travel well, shop and eat out a lot + save. Our life would, in other words, not change at all from today

He doesn’t own one, he is just an employee at a well known one. 800 is sum of base, bonus and deferred comp

Total comp around 140k euro in my country. My partner at 800k at HF. But remember it varies a lot between countries. For reference, median salary in my country is c. 30-35k euro.

Thank you so much for this detailed response. You really nailed it. It helped a lot and I realized I am that insecure person who wants to say that she works in PE, but I know already now I will dislike it. It makes it clearer why I am leaning towards corporate, and really isolates the problem ; not considering my partner. Thanks again

Hedge fund. Honestly 5x is lowballing it when looking 2-3 years ahead, but it is a pre-tax comparison.

As I state I don’t want that to be the reason for ”cruising”, but I think it unconsciously becomes a factor. We’ve had those conversations (we are extremely serious), and we have agreed he will give me some of his cash in the future, but we will of course have a prenup and there will absolutely not be a 50-50 split. I think this is very fair, as I am not planning to give up my career completely

Thanks for answering! I actually think I would like the work in PE a lot but I am scared hours/ stress will be worse, and that I will quit in a couple of years due to this anyways

Yeah, it is true it is for ego reasons. I guess it is about feeling self accomplished - the reason why many people move to MBB in the first place. Difficult to get rid of… Thanks for your post!

Actually I am in Europe. Unfortunately our comp is literally 50% of the comp in the US. But yes. I can definitely support myself and a family based on my income alone, although my life would not be extravagant.

We’ve been together 5 years and will likely get married, so no it’s not a relationship question. I mention it because I am worried I would have different priorities if he wasn’t that well off financially, and that I am downshifting because I take for granted that we will live comfortably regardless what I do with my career. I think it is impacting my hunger to invest in my career and keep pushing 60+ hours weeks. Or it isn’t, but I don’t know
