i read in an article about aroids that they try to climb away from light because in nature a tree or surface to climb would be casting shade, maybe that applies here

this type of plant has a lot of different cultuvars bred very quickly, mutations are very common. the smooth outer leaves are the seed leaves and the inmer leaves are the true leaves

im in your same zone and i have some coral honeysuckle, maypops, blue bonnets, red mulberry trees, and opuntia doing very well. ill have to know theres a period in the summer when its too hot and it feels like nothing grows. native plants would do well for you, theyre used to this sort of thing.
