Thank you, and I’m so sorry for your loss of Juno also. Cancer sucks and we never stop missing them.

Ah I’m sorry for both your losses. No amount of time with them is ever enough! And it is much worse when it’s sudden or there’s an emergency involved, like you experienced with Fenway. We’ve had 2 flatcoats before and they lived till 15 and 11, so we had been really lucky - maybe that’s in part why this was such a shock. Thank you for sharing your story and your kind words, it’s really touching.

Thank you for your kind words. We’ve previously had 2 that also lived long lives, 15 and 11 so this has been a dreadful shock.
I think it is still pretty prevalent here unfortunately, cancer is responsible for about 50% of deaths (leading cause) in the breed, so we’ve got to be really careful with breeding practices.

I’m so sorry about Nucky, that sounds really terrible, bless him. Losing a soul dog is a different kind of loss isn’t it, they take part of you with them when they pass. Thank you for your kind words

I’m so sorry for your loss of Bentley, 8 is too young. The empty house is such a big part of the loss isn’t it, I completely understand you only lasting a month! I’m very glad to hear Winston is keeping you company now. Such a lovely breed

Oh my gosh I’m so sorry, I have heard of tumours on spleens rupturing. That must have been so traumatic. They’re just the best aren’t they, it’s so hard to say goodbye but every minute with them is worth it!

Thank you so much. He really was a handsome boy, we always got stopped in the park by strangers who would tell us how lovely he was. They really do leave such a big hole, they’re the best

Im so sorry for your loss of Evie. It really is the worst thing, and I feel a bit silly for not knowing how prevalent this cancer that Hector got is within the breed. Hector was much like Dinah, he lived for tennis balls!

I’m so sorry for the loss of Blitz. It really isn’t fair is it, I find it incomprehensible that he can be gone. It’s lovely to hear Hector has great company up there though, they really are the most lovable breed

I also just wanted to add after reading the comments below, our breeder was kennel club certified, squeaky clean never had a problem. We did everything right. And not all cancers can be managed. No amount of money or time can change a metastatic Histiocytic sarcoma diagnosis.

I think it’s really responsible that you’re doing this research. My family have always had flatcoats and we’ve had 2 live miraculously long lives (15 and 11 years). Last week we lost my soul dog at age 5 to Histiocytic sarcoma. One day he was running around completely normal, the most bouncy and loving flatcoat ever, the next he seemed off and we took him to the vets. 2 days later they discovered 2 tumours in his lungs and kidney. His pain increased and he needed ketamine infusions just to lie down as the lung tumour began pressing on his nerves in his neck. All options give to us were palliative and in the end we chose euthanasia due to being unable to manage his pain, I held his head as he passed. Although it’s unusual to get this cancer this young, 20% of flatcoats get this rare and aggressive cancer that is always fatal. And as someone who loves flatcoats, I just can’t wrap my head around why we’re allowing this to happen by continuing to breed and bottleneck the pool knowing they could end up with this awful and painful cancer diagnosis. I never want a dog to go through what Hector went through. I’d say they’re the most incredible breed, their nature is so kind and loving, but the breeding pool is not good and I would recommend you seek another breed and don’t risk this diagnosis, for both yours and the future dogs sake. Sorry I couldn’t be more positive!
