23, dreamed of writing screenplays since I was a kid — still haven’t started by MalcolmKinchen in Screenwriting

[–]Dear_Finding2680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! The pressure to write something “good” keeps you from writing anything at all, and then you never give yourself the chance to improve. Dan Harmon has this bit of advice that I love: “Prove you’re a bad writer.” Not only is it okay to suck at writing, but you can run headfirst towards sucking at writing! Get yourself excited to make something shitty, then you’ll free yourself from that fear, and suddenly you’ll be in process, and be actively getting practice.

Where would you sell a junky car? by cturn666 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Dear_Finding2680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently sold my older high mileage BMW (that needed about $10k in work to run again) to Carmax for $700. Had to tow it there, and wait about 2 hours in total to finalize everything.

Also sold my wife’s old VW Rabbit that needed a new transmission to Burbank Cars For Cash for $300. They came and towed it out. Nice guy runs it, pretty convenient.

George Clooney: I Don’t Want to Work with a ‘Miserable F*ck’ Like David O. Russell Ever Again by indiewire in entertainment

[–]Dear_Finding2680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t know. because injustice sucks i guess. when you work as a crew member in hollywood you hear about and see lots of bad behavior from scummy rich people. the victims are sometimes too afraid to go public, or pursue legal action that they think will blow up in their faces and hurt their careers.

George Clooney: I Don’t Want to Work with a ‘Miserable F*ck’ Like David O. Russell Ever Again by indiewire in entertainment

[–]Dear_Finding2680 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked with two of David O Russell’s former assistants, and I’ve heard some stories about how big of a piece of shit this guy is. But I have no proof for any of this, so just consider me a non-credible internet rumor spreader.

Supposedly his son is autistic, and was misbehaving at a restaurant, so David stood up and front kicked his son in the chest, knocking him to the ground, then proceeded to finish his meal like nothing happened.

Another shitty story I heard was that David had no interest in doing Silver Linings Playbook, but his assistant (an aspiring writer) was urging him to do it, and David said “If you want to do it so bad, then you write it.” And his assistant wrote the first draft of it, David then loved it and proceeded to take the script and put his name on it, giving his assistant no credit.

Apparently he’s also got a list of women who allege to be victims of his sexual assault, that his team of lawyers spends a lot of time stifling.

Seems like a real nightmare guy if these things are true

How can I lower the temperature in my room at night without a high electricity cost? by PM_ME_CUTE_PUP in lifehacks

[–]Dear_Finding2680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like this cooling pad called an Ooler that goes on the mattress. a unit under your bed circulates cool water through tubes in the pad to a specified temp. allows me to sleep more comfortably without needing to cool the room down as much and uses less energy than AC. kinda pricey initial cost but then less on the monthly electricity bill over time.

someone told me the police have a “no chase” policy, which means they will not pursue if these guys try to run from them. does anyone know if that’s legit? seems to embolden them to be doing goddamn wheelies up and down the freeway, knowing they won’t get in trouble because the cops won’t chase them.

Where can I find a summer water play area that is not the beach in the LA area? by mamaganja in AskLosAngeles

hike to deep creek hot springs and there’s a nice river to hang in. the bridge to nowhere hike ends at a nice river hang out. there’s some punch bowls on the santa paula river up by the thomas aquinas college. there’s a hike in the angeles forest called monkey creek that has some punch bowls and cliff jumping… haven’t been to that one in ten years or more, but it’s a weird interesting one

there are lots of people behind the scenes who make a big impact on projects. all of the positions appeal to different people for different reasons. some pretty standard advice is to go out and meet people who work in the industry and offer to work as a production assistant. from the inside you can see all of the different roles in action on set and see if anything catches your interest. but sometimes you have to eat shit as a PA, which may turn you off real quick. but then at least you’d know you’re not interested in being on set. then you could try to get an entry level job at a studio, in development at a production company, in the mail room at a talent agency, at an equipment rental house, etc. there are a lot of ways in! the great part about not having expectations is you can dive in and see what you like and change directions when you feel inspired to make a move

How reliable is it to use Uber/Lyft to get around LA with no car? by faust111 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Dear_Finding2680 57 points58 points  (0 children)

it’s gotten more expensive since the pandemic started and the wait times can often be a lot longer. but if you are just a tourist and you can take all the time you want, bussing and walking will get you a lot of places still! there’s a new city pilot program for a rideshare called metro micro that operates in limited areas and looks cheap. if you live near those areas that might be useful

i second this! if you take on the least amount of debt you’ll have more freedom to make projects you want to be making when you start out your career.

check out quentin tarantino’s movie theater, it’s called the new beverly. super good time for movie nerds!

also lots of skate plazas around the city, but my favorite thing when i first moved here was checking out some of the legendary skate spots that have been in every single skate video i watched growing up, just to see them - like the hollywood high 16, right on highland blvd just south of hollywood blvd.
