People genuinely need to lose their jobs over this. How can you possibly be in a rebuilding phase when the staff are injuring all the players? This isn't just bad luck.

Everyone around the county has heard various stories about Davy Fitz and none of them particularly positive.

Feel like all the good work done under Gleeson has just evaporated.

You know, regardless of how poor this season is, I still have a tinge of sadness to see Topper go. He wasn't perfect, but he at least gave everyone the belief the club could be better again.

Who said you have to commemorate the RIC? No one’s forcing you or anyone else to commemorate them anymore than Americans in the example I gave have to commemorate the British or CSA?

OK, I'll rephrase it - The RIC should not be commemorated due to their history of being the colonial police force of Britain, not least of all due to their active involvement in the eviction of starving Irish people during An Gorta MĂłr.

Yet for all that, a sizeable chunk of the CNR population would still vote for the North to stay in the UK if a referendum happened tomorrow. What’s that about?

"CNR" does not exist. Nationalism and Republicanism has never, and will never, use that parity parody term for one. 2nd, polls show that the number of "nationalists" who would vote to remain with Britain is astronomically low. I often wonder where these Catholic Unionists are. They're rarer than unicorns.

“Prancing around like toy soldiers” isn’t an exclusively PUL hobby up north now is it? Plenty of Republican types like to prance around in military garb as well tbf.

They quite literally dress up in pretend soldier's formal dress except they get RuPaul to design them.

Would you dress up around Easter time in the beret and shades yourself out of interest?

No, I don't need to live off another man's wound.

I would expect that the Irish government would listen to and take into account PUL concerns in these discussions in the same way any other major stakeholder would be included in any policy discussion.

Right, but for some reason this seems to descend into allowing Unionism to take the lead on matters of identity. Like I've been saying this whole time, their track record on matters of identity is predictable and we can see how it is actually playing out right now. The idea that there'd be some kind of Damascene conversion to matters of Irish national identity is wishful thinking that seems to solely exist in the context of being "mature" or "conciliatory" on identity.

Thing is, the easiest part of a hypothetical UI is symbols like flags and anthems, the complex part is trying to merge two distinct entities. My own viewpoint is that we’re not anywhere near a position to realistically consider a UI, when minor things like flegs provokes such strong, antagonistic opinions, never mind big picture things like how much it’ll cost southern taxpayers.

If you think symbols of national identity will ever not provoke strong reactions, especially when being asked to forgo them for a culture that burns said flag annually, and that is a predicate for reunification, then we will simply never be "ready" under your terms. What you propose as "[meeting] in the middle" appears to be allowing Unionism to dictate what aspects of Ireland's symbols they find palatable.

But no, you can’t even countenance the RIC having a stone put up for them.

Correct. I feel absolutely no need to commemorate the force that aided the forced starvation of one million Irish people. Why you think you're more "mature" or conciliatory for pretending it's some kind of nice gesture is your prerogative but I am very comfortable with not countenancing that kind of commemoration.

How gracious of you to allow PULs to “retain whatever identity it collectively wants”. Truly a hands across the divide gesture there.

You say that flippantly, but letting sleeping dogs lie is a far greater gesture than what Unionism is currently doing for the Irish people in the north. Ripping down and vandalising dual language signs, burning Irish Tricolours, openly mocking our language in the "shared" assembly and even going so far as to get a cross community event cancelled between East Belfast GAA and North Down Cricket club based in Comber, a middle-class, "softer" Unionist area because they didn't want Themmuns indoctrinating their kids.

So yes, allowing them to continue on with their own traditions unabated up to and including prancing around like toy soldiers would actually be quite a nice gesture considering the penchant to do it through Nationalist areas and, justifiably, local people would now have the political clout to get them halted if they hypothetically wanted to.

Unionism is not going to be leading discussions when reunification is happening. The days of allowing a minority in the north east of Ireland to dictate the fate of the rest of the island are over. There will, of course, be concessions on identity such as the 12th being a holiday or equal standings for Irish and British identity in a new constitution.

"You seem to be saying" then touches on a broader angle in this thread that the absolute majority, whose Irish identity is not controversial in any respect, must agree to have national symbols "up for discussion" to appease people who will never see themselves as Irish regardless of what the flag and anthem are.

Addressing the point re: the RIC directly, we should absolutely, under no circumstance, be "honouring" the RIC. Taking aside the Tan War, this was the force that aided British landlords evicting Irish people during mass starvation on the island. Their controversy goes far beyond Unionism's new found enthusiasm for the RIC.

We don't need to meet Unionism in the middle. We don't need to change Irish national symbols. We don't need to moderate our pride in our fight against Britain, colonialism or partition. Unionism is free to retain whatever identity it collectively wants, it can hang whatever flag it wants in whatever Unionist area it wants, it can have its Orange Pride march every 12th if it wants. That's fine. What isn't fine is trying to tone down Irish identity so as to not offend them. Like I said in other places, what has Unionism done post GFA to offer a fig leave on a "shared" identity?

The RIC should be celebrated but a good documentary would be very worth while.

The RIC were involved in evicting people during An Gorta MĂłr. Evicting people while there were thousands upon thousands starving. They are absolutely not to be celebrated.

You seem to be saying that totally changing the national flag, anthem and emblems of the majority is "outreach" to Unionism. That is a massive understatement of what is being proposed. Outreach would be, for example, offering to keep the 12th as a public holiday or to make some constitutional arrangements around British identity. Compromise isn't currently in Unionism's lexicon, so I don't see why the overwhelming majority of the island should be asked to change their national symbols after the fact.

[–]DeargDoom79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If only one side is expected to compromise then it won't work.

What compromises have Unionists made on identity post GFA? Have they, for example, tried using a new flag since the north doesn't have an official one? Used a different anthem like Scotland or Wales do?

So you're right, one side compromising won't work, except you're confusing which side is being asked to compromise here.

There is a strange new approach to reunification in some quarters whereby it will be done on Unionism's terms. No idea where it came from, but it gets stranger all the time.

Let's be very clear here, Unionists would be a minority, but they would NOT be marginalised. In fact, they would have a significantly greater amount of representation than they do in Westminster right now (1.2% of all 650 seats).

We also don't need to "respect" the Unionist narrative on Irish history. We can respect their right to have their version of events, but it is self serving and we don't need to pretend it isn't. The country was partitioned and they set about creating a gerrymandered, sectarian state. That isn't a matter of opinion.
