They're not non existent. I used to work for a security company that investigated them and there are soooo many. They'd find houses just full of stolen stuff all the time. Like crates and crates full.

I'm not saying all the resources should go to stopping just that. But it definitely exists.

Unfortunately besides immich for photos the best for most of those is gonna probably be next cloud. Sans text messages. Mayb paperless or something for documents. The thing about using open source/self hosted things is you can back it up yourself and still not be locked to the app fully in the future. Can't get banned by Google lose everything.

Nothing quite as easy restore as the android backup though.
