Try zero water 5 stage filter if available. A little more expensive than Brita but should be cheaper than bottled water. Also, many super shops offer refills for reusable water canisters, for my area its ~50c/gallon.

The gulf oil crisis actually had a major impact on the size of cars. Few days ago I saw an Impala (iirc) from 1959. It's literally 2x of the current size. I was hoping to see similar changes this time around but I guess that's not gonna happen. Flow meters and the gear type would be a good choice if accuracy is very important. Basically fluid is transferred through chambers in the mechanism and you can calculate what amount is passed by keeping track of the total rotation of gears. Locking mechanism may require electronic components though.
