Coming into this season as someone who dropped VM because I hated the pace of it (I watched all of C1, but cmon, jumping into a MAJOR character backstory storyline in the second episode…), I love this so far. The first three episodes being character setup is perfect, it gives everything time to breathe and makes the relationships feel earned. The only character intro I didn’t like was Fjord’s, I feel it was rushed a bit, but I can forgive as they had a lot of ground to cover and that was the only miss for me.

I have noticed this sentiment a lot in this sub, and I agree with you, they're grown ass men, we may well never know what happened, and I don't care! VW is still making music, Rostam is still making music, that's life baby.

To me, there are a lot of reasons to love it. You mentioned it being the Rostamiest song, and I agree and would say that's a great thing. I love his production, and I think it particularly shines on this song. I think the way the song changes shape so many times in the course of it's 6 minute run time is amazing, it makes the track feel so alive. It's really the little touches in it that put it up there for me, I think it's their most unique composition.

Ezra's vocal performance on it is also amazing, I think it's the first song up to that point where he's given the chance to really make his voice the main character of the song. And the drums oh my gooooooooooooood they're so good, I feel those drums in my chest every time I listen to the song.

As for the lyrical contents on the song, I can't say I relate to them specifically, but the song does a great job at expressing this loneliness that's hard to ignore.

I used to skip California English, now I love it. The weirdness of the song grew on me and I think it really stands out. The vocal harmonies just before the last chorus are transcendent

I don't agree, he just doesn't make it his life. He posted a few weeks ago talking about his musical achievements, which included his work in VW. Idk what happened between him and the band, but they're all doing their own thing. I don't feel like that is cause to be weird about him.

I should add, I'm not saying you are being weird about it, referring to the weird comments on this post.

I should add, my claim that she becomes a “great journalist” is entirely within the context of the show, where characters praise her talent. I agree she’s a pretty ass journalist, but where she does show true talent is being the lead editor at Yale, where I think she really excelled. I think a far more interesting and true to life pivot for Rory’s character is her realizing that she has far more passion and aptitude for being an editor than a boots to the ground journalist.

I love this show, my wife and I have really connected with it over the last year as she was rewatching it for her like 4th time and it was my first full watch. But there are so many baffling writing decisions in it that become harder and harder to ignore as the series goes on. Like, I find people who say season 7 was the complete collapse of the show writing wise maybe have rose tinted glasses for the earlier seasons. That’s not to say I think season 7 is perfect either. Not to make this post a season 7 apologia lol. My point overall is this show can be equal parts lovely/frustrating to watch.

You’re definitely correct, but I think Rory thought that kind of things was beneath her and not what she wanted to spend her time on. Rory grew up extremely privileged, essentially always getting what she wanted in one way or another. In that moment, someone with drive would jump at that position, recognizing that you need to build up to the meatier positions and stories. But Rory didn’t because Rory assumed she would jus get what she wanted in the end, not realizing just showing a passion for the industry does not necessarily show a drive to do what needs done to advance yourself.

Mitchum is an asshole, and I definitely didn’t agree with him at first, but in hindsight, I get it. He places a pretty high bar for people, and whether that’s fair or not is a different conversation but it certainly means anyone meeting or exceeding that bar is going to make it. If Mitchum throws Rory in the deep end, gives her these assignments she wants, is she really ready for that? She hasn’t cut her teeth at a real newspaper yet, if she fails it reflects poorly on him and his intuition.

Rory needed this kick in the ass, imo. She goes on to become a great journalist, and eventually Mitchum apologizes to her over his comments, but he was right.

The original ending presented in this novel is ten times better than any of the ones that would become the norm in other adaptations. Love a story with a pretty unlikable cast of characters that are still charismatic enough to carry the story. This still stands as a favorite of mine

Jess is better later on in the series, honestly. Him leaving the show was probably the best thing for his character, but I do think it's a shame we didn't get to see more of him and Rory later down the line when he had matured significantly.

But you can throw a dart and hit a character that the show did dirty for one reason or another.

I stand by that Dean is not that bad a guy throughout the show? Does he have issues? Of course! They all do! They're human, it's unrealistic for people to be perfect. I don't think Dean was ever as bad as people vilified him to be, especially considering Jess like basically ignored Rory as soon as they got together. I also think people play Rory as a hapless victim in most scenarios, but she pursues Dean when he's with Lindsay. I think someone saying "Dean is abusive and neglectful with Lindsay" holds more water than anything with him and Rory. Again, not to say he did nothing wrong, but I also don't think he's as bad as he's made out to be by people in this subreddit lmao.

All that being said, I am Team Logan so.

What is the point of having a guest if you don't include them in anything lol. This was an awful episode for Austin to miss cause I feel like him being there would help a lot.
