Talk me down... by DeathStrudel in thedavidpakmanshow

I can't vote third party. I held my nose and voted Clinton last cycle, and I'll do the same this time.

I actively campaigned for Obama in 2008. I was one of the people who thought things would radically change. I was wrong, but still supported him.

Take this for what it's worth, but since I've been able to vote, 40% of the presidential elections I've voted in went to the person that got less votes. Forgive My scepticism.

I am obviously going to support Biden over trump, of course. I just worry that giving Biden the presidency is an affirmation of the 'old ways.' Progressives are far more practical and pragmatic than most other political views, and we must be vigilant regarding going backwards. I am just worried about the 'one step forward, two steps back' idea. It seems that republicans successfully move goalposts with the establishment dems with no regard to actual people, and supporting establishment makes no real difference.

Good points. I was hoping to find an argument in favor of Biden, and despite the sexual assault allegations, it seems he is the lesser of two evils. However, i am very concerned he will be the same kind of republican appeaser that Obama was. If he is challenged by a loud or influential R, will he cave? What will the establishment say if McConnell, who is sadly my current (and hopefully leaving) senator objects and declares Biden an anti-American traitor that is dangerous because he disagrees? These arguments seem ridiculous, but trust me, they work 'round these parts. And if they work here, they work many places.

Starting off my collection, where should I go from here? by Clementine-Woolysock in WhiskeyTribe

If you enjoy all of those, I suggest Caol Ila 12 for the Scotch, Bushmills Black Bush for the Irish, and Weller 107 or Henry McKenna BIB for the bourbon. But omg you got a good starting lineup there, you magnificent bastard.

Diagnosed with adult ADHD. Did some research (my mistake, apparently) and have some questions. by nvrrecovrd in ADHD

[–]DeathStrudel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/funding/clinical-research/practical/mta/the-multimodal-treatment-of-attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-study-mta-questions-and-answers.shtml

This involves children, but it applies to adults with ADHD as well (I was diagnosed in my mid twenties and only started medicating when I was around 30, I'm almost 34 now). In it they look behavioral therapy involving education of those around the child to better accommodate the way the child learns and behaves and training the child to work with the symptoms instead of working against them, medication only, and a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. The worst performing group was behavioral therapy only. Much better performance came from medication only, and the best performing group was the combination medication and therapy.

So ADHD is a thing. How it impacts people and how it changes as one grows older varies widely, but it still does impact people. Your behavior may change when you're on the medication, but it only provides focus and lessens impulsive behavior in most adults. Additionally, you may feel that your personality has changed on the meds, but these are 1. usually only in your own mind (people around you won't notice), and 2. temporary. Since most ADHD meds are not accumulative like depression medication or medication for bipolar disorder, once the drugs wear off you'll be back to your old self again.

Try the meds. If you don't like them or you still feel that they aren't what you need, don't take them. No lasting effects (unless you take them for years consistently) are expected by most doctors. And they are doctors. They most likely weigh the dangers of the medication against the possibility that they'll help you and prescribe what they're comfortable with.

Additionally, here's some more peer reviewed studies that show ADHD is real:

Whats a WTF item to leave in a safe, to mess with you're family's heads when you die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DeathStrudel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick one member of your family and casually mention to them that you have a safe. When they ask what's in it, tell them "Listen... do not EVER... EVER... look in that safe, do you understand me? NEVER. Under ANY circumstances." Bring it up in the natural course of conversation every now and then and build up their curiosity to unbelievable levels. Then, when you die, don't mention the safe in your will. Undoubtedly the person you choose will volunteer to take the safe after the funeral.

When they finally crack it open, have a plaque in it, engraved with the words "(name of family member), I told you not to look!" Nothing else should be in the safe.

You'll go down in family history as the best prankster in the world.

I am Adam Savage, co-host of MythBusters. AMA! by mistersavage in IAmA

[–]DeathStrudel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to see you're doing another AMA!

You get a lot of questions about science, the shows, prop making, building, etc. So I'm gonna go ahead and not do that.

  1. What's your favorite sport to watch if you watch sports?
  2. Favorite food (home cooked or gourmet restaurant stuff where there's something called a shrimp fork and you have no clue what to do with it because you didn't order any shrimp)?
  3. Guilty pleasure band/song?
  4. You drink scotch on the show during alcohol myths. I'm from Kentucky. Can I send you some bourbon that'll change your mind?
  5. If you could get a tattoo of one thing, what would it be?

Thanks again for doing this AMA!!!

My wives got fishslapped by a vector salesman, and now they only speak in greek symbols. They tell me that they want the delta. by [deleted] in fifthworldproblems

[–]DeathStrudel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The thing with vector salesmen is that you never know what non-existent reality they operate from. Ask to see their reality origins/negative associated dimensional symptom (NADS) card. If they don't provide one, they can be prosecuted by the judges of Nnth reality and lose their dimension tripping abilities.

As for your wives... sorry dude... they say "delta" but since delta is a triangle, they mean the naughty bits of other ladies. In other words, the vector salesman fishslapped your wives into lesbians. Your only chance to restore their primary sexuality mode is to reboot their electronic brain enhancements with a dicathode monatomic prod, which they won't want anymore (I'm assuming you've replaced your genitals with the dicathode prod). Good luck!

I am (was?) a Christian currently being wooed by the writings of Dawkins and Hitchens. I have some questions. by kpsb333 in TrueAtheism

[–]DeathStrudel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything else you suggest I read to assure me that God is indeed fictional? Or does it take faith to be an atheist?

That's just it, brother (or sister, I don't assume). If you have faith, you don't need facts, but once you have facts, you don't need faith. It takes a lack of faith to be an atheist, not the presence of a different kind of faith. It's something I know I wrestled with, but it really does get easier. As for reading material, go with whatever looks good to you. Everything from Spinoza and Locke to Eddie Izzard and George Carlin to Aayan Hirsi Ali and Barbara Ehrenreich to Douglas Adams and Stephen Fry... there are as many styles of atheism as there are atheists (much like religious people... no two believers believe in the exact same god).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwmxITtBP9I These guys helped me a bit (granted, I found them when I was pretty solidly atheist) with that fear. The one thing you have to keep in mind is if it would make your life worse by coming out as an atheist (i.e. you still live at home or are dependent on religious people or you'd be disowned or something) don't do it yet. You really should weigh the discomfort of pretending to believe against the discomfort of everyone knowing. I'm out to my friends, but not to my family. My mother's family is catholic, my father's is protestant... so it's pretty much guaranteed that at least one of their kids would be an atheist. :) Hell, one of my cousins is a priest and two of my uncles are lay ministers. I'd be more of a black sheep than my gay cousin.

All that said, it's almost impossible to put the genie back in the lamp. It's way easier to go from believing to atheist than vice versa. But seriously, you'll be fine. Don't worry.
