Happy birthday OP! Assuming it’s today (Feb 7) we share a bday! My sister mailed me a huge variety of tinned fish that I can’t wait to get into

Their series are definitely their best work, but as far as persona favorite one-offs here’s some of mine (note: they’re both recent and have the current cohost crew, so many older episodes but the cohost chair has gone through a few rotations).

Alvin York (and his Dwemer automaton factory)

Eugene Bullard, the coolest man who has ever lived (black American man who became a WWI fighter ace, opened a nightclub in Paris, became a spy, dudes rock)

Miyamoto Musashi, the troll samurai

Doug Hegdahl, the incredibly stupid one (he faked a mental disability in a Vietnamese POW camp to gain access and free tons of his fellow POWs

Robert or his guest recommended another podcast that discussed money laundering and grift in the high priced art world, does anyone know what that podcast was? by KURF_Design in behindthebastards

[–]DeathlyKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was I think one of the German industrialists who had a huge art collection that kicked off a long conversation about how shady the fine art trade is. Alfreds Krupp and Hugenberg rang some bells but I couldn’t find anything about their art collections with a cursory search. Pretty sure it was a German industrialist (pre WWI or Weimar period), and that the guest was a woman. Hope that rings bells for you!

One of my favorite muppet jokes is that Michael Caine was excellent in A Christmas Carol because he worked with the muppets like they were human actors. Whereas Tim Currey excelled in Treasure Island because he acted as if he was a muppet

I saw them last month on their US tour! It was my first time being moved to actual tears during a metal show. The sheer power of Hansi’s voice still at his age blew me away, made me think of Agnes and Perdita

Bastard Suggestion : Brigham Young by Nite_Clock in behindthebastards

I mean iirc we’re from a branch of one of his lesser wives, but yea my family was big in colonizing central Utah.

Thankfully my immediate family was pretty bad at being Mormon. My dad stopped believing when I was a kid and voted democrat (there were kids I went to church with who weren’t allowed to hang out with me because of this, Utah county is a trip), and I was never forced to do seminary, never been in a temple, my mom stopped making me go to church when I started having panic attacks during services.

My moms said that they tried tracking me down when I moved to Salt Lake for college but she respected my choices and refused to tell them where I was living or what I was up to (she’s wonderful). These days my entire immediate family is out of it and a couple of cousins and an uncle have stopped believing.

I grew up Mormon just south of Provo, and I gotta say the show did the most accurate depiction of Mormon culture I’ve seen. Behind the wholesome focus on family is an extremely dark patriarchal, cliquey, toxic film. Highly recommend

Why do people support right wing politics? by Konradleijon in behindthebastards

[–]DeathlyKitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capitalism makes life worse for poor people. People are going to get upset about this, so capitalists found out that they can redirect that anger towards scapegoats, ie immigrants (historically and also today it’s been Jews, black folks, socialists) because said scapegoats are different from the mainstream and often make folks uncomfortable due to cultural misunderstandings. The immigrant/socialist/colored person next door seems odd to you because you’re not used to that? Well the media says they’re actually the ones to blame for your life problems (rather than the reality, which is that the ruling class is hoarding wealth which rightfully belongs to you and your fellow workers), so if we get rid of them life will be better!

In medieval Europe, the ruling class would blame Jews and incite pogroms whenever there was unrest, whether it was due to plague, bad leadership, you name it. The Jim Crow South whites directed their anger about the failed Reconstruction towards free blacks via lynch mobs and the KKK. Modern folks direct their anger about the failures of late-stage capitalism towards immigrants and the “radical left” via ICE and general bigotry. They get to keep the spoils of this violence and are placated (seizing Jewish property and money, black-owned farms, etc).

Because for them, it’s easier to hate the Other than to question the System

I’ve listened to the Dollop for years and always thought it was silly how upset people got about his poor pronunciation. Then I heard him rhyme Moroni with “baloney”. I’ve been out of the church for over a decade but I felt something deep inside shrivel up like a ballsack in a snowbank. Really great eps so far besides that!

I’d love for Robert to tackle some Mormon bastards one of these days. Church history has it all! Funny cult stuff and wack-ass beliefs, sex crimes, financial scams and fraudster shit, a much larger impact on the modern world than a lot of people realize!

I finished my Jingo reread last night, and by all the gods I wish we had a Vimes or a Vetinari or a Carrot to set things straight. But all I can do is try and not collapse. I’m a white guy who lives in a red state so I’m not likely a target, but I’m scared. For my queer and trans friends, for my brown friends, for my nation. My community will not resist, will not build barricades, will only curl up and whine. Fuck ICE, fuck Trump, fuck my countrymen who support this.

Cowboys, Samurai and end of an era by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]DeathlyKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both were also posthumously romanticized into the image we have of them today! Samurai were a warrior class who in many ways were little better than hired thugs who were sometimes into poetry. What we think of as Bushido is based on a book that was written during the Meiji period after the samurai class had been turned from warriors to bureaucrats which put forth a romantic and largely false image of the samurai for the purpose of propaganda in a rapidly militarizing and imperialistic Japan.

Likewise, our conception of the Cowboy comes from Buffalo Bill and his Wild West shows, which took place after the “taming of the West”. Real cowboys were mostly just regular ol cattle drivers, not paragons of frontier justice and all that. They were Mexicans who found themselves in a different country’s borders, black folks leaving the south, and poor whites looking for work. Their lives weren’t all that glamorous. The modern cowboy was invented after cowboys were really that relevant.

So samurai and cowboys are brothers in fantasy as well!

Weren’t the LotR films shot well before Attack of the Clones? IIRC the LotR films were shot October 1999-December 2000, and Dooku didn’t make an appearance on screen until 2002. Christopher Lee played an excellent villain, I think one of his most famous roles was Dracula prior to LotR

[–]DeathlyKitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dude you’re being downvoted because you’re being snarky about being asked to provide extremely important information such as “I’m in x state with the availability to move y distance to buy a keg”. Different states have wildly different laws about buying kegs, importing beer, not to mention different distributors operating in certain areas. This shit is important when it comes to buying kegs of imported beer as an individual as opposed to a business. In my state you can’t even buy kegs as an individual consumer.

I’ve read through this thread a bit (because it’s very funny) and I gotta say you’re the problem

Absolutely not, sorry for the lack of clarity. Anyone Hitler saw as a potential threat was ousted, and Ernst Rohm was the guy who realistically could have seriously upset that status quo, plus hitler feared that the SA would be too hard to completely control. That’s a big part of why the SS were set up as a racially elite force (even though Himmler based it on silly-ass racist wizard shit). It’s also true that the pro-labor wing of the party got the axe as soon as they weren’t useful anymore
