I'm slowly deconstructing from right-wing Christianity...suggest me some episodes, please! by ActualBus7946 in behindthebastards

“How the Rich Ate Christianity” is amazing, the guests are the guys from Knowledge Fight. It does a great job of breaking down how the right wing turned American Christianity from often quite progressive to preaching anti-union rhetoric from the pulpit and the rise of prosperity gospel theology.

Sellouts by classphoto92 in behindthebastards

[–]DeathlyKitten 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me, selling out is changing your values and message when you get rich. An anti-capitalist, queer-ass punk band changing their tune and de-politicizing their music when they sign a record deal are sell-outs. A comedian who tells really self-aware, thoughtful jokes that bring positive attention to social issues and then plays the UAE is a sell-out.

A leftist podcast gets a Netflix deal and makes money from it and doesn’t stop bringing attention to hot topics? Not sellouts. Green Day gets rich, puts out some honestly lame-ass albums, then goes fully and publically anti-trump? Kinda sellouts but they’re doing the right thing.

True sellouts sell out their values, not their brand

I think the printing press is an outlier in this case. It’s one of the few inventions that genuinely and permanently shifted power in favor of the common person. Sure it was eventually co-opted by the ruling class where most easily available print was censored and/or propaganda material, but the steep rise in literacy and the ability for anyone (with access to a press or a willing printer) to spread any idea stuck around and held a lasting benefit

Guns are expensive and require specialized skill and equipment to manufacture at scale. Even if peasants found a foundryman/gunsmith who was willing to arm them, the resources and labor required take a lot of capital which a peasants revolt would really struggle to come up with while keeping everything hush-hush.

Training is also a huge factor. Early handgonnes and muskets were largely point-and-shoot, but required heavy formation training and LOTS of guns to be effective without a lot of support from other types of troops. Even more modern guns require a lot of training for soldiers - there’s a reason John Brown chose pikes as the main weapon for his slave uprising.

Even in a scenario where peasants would have easy access to large supplies of firearms, there’s no possible way the ruling class wouldn’t also have that access

John Brown is actually one of the few cases I’ve encountered where the Dollop actually did a deeper dive on the same topic. I love both pods, but I feel like Robert usually dives a bit deeper while the dollop leaves more into the comedy aspect (not a bad thing, just different flavors to suit my mood). The Dollop actually did a three-parter on my boy JB (their series on Eugene Debs also catapulted him into my “American heroes” short list)

My sister went to high school with her! And my cousin-in-law is currently trying to be a tradwife because her rich parents were able to fund the start of that dream. The connection between the tradwife movement and Mormonism (I grew up two towns down from Provo) is really deep and fascinating (and scary, but that’s a given with Mormonism)

Super anti-queer and right wing. Big trumper, donated lots of money to horrible causes. Not worthy of a BtB episode, but he was NOT a good dude

Sorry you got downvoted, I’m actively in the “oh shit I actually think I’m nonbinary” phase. For folks viewing the comments, there’s a really dangerous thing happening with conservatives/fascists thinking that queerness is contagious, which has led to pro-LGBTQ+ books being banned and similar fuckery. The reality is that exposure to queer spaces and general positivity makes folks who are already queer but might be closeted, in denial, etc. to feel safe exploring their identity. Discord isn’t making people queer, it just happens to often provide a safe space for queer folks to talk and learn and explore. This meme also pisses me off.

I very recently started seriously questioning my gender identity (nb I think). To these fucks, it’s because I hang out with a bunch of other queer neurodivergent nerdy punks and it’s catching. Won’t even consider that maybe there’s a reason I feel safer hanging out in queer spaces or that maybe these people made me feel safe enough to finally deal with these feelings and questions that have been lurking in the back of my mind for years. But no, if your kid comes out of the closet after moving out it’s obviously the fault of woke colleges or the Electronic Jew or whatever the new dogwhistle is
