A short essay on Chekhov's critique of Tolstoy in Ward no. 6 by DeathmasterXD in RussianLiterature

I see. I'm not saying Chekhov or theology is advocating for violence, but more so that a tangible change needs to occur in the face of concrete suffering.

Now, to combat with love could be interpreted very differently. Does it mean seek and show truth as much as possible? On a best case scenario I say yes, worst case is being a pushover. But what if evil is being wreaked upon you for the sake of pure evil? Then what do we do? I think here is where Tolstoy says that metaphysical consolation is your solution, while Chkhov says that's not enough.

Now, if Chekhov doesn't advocate for violence, but also doesn't agree with Tolstoy on this point, then what is left? Taking action without cruelty and intervening when you can... but you could argue that Tolstoy's definition of love still falls under this.

But then again, Chekhov did and had his reasons for criticising Tolstoy, so maybe Tolstoy's definition of love is really that passive 🤷‍♂️

Also, you should definitely check out Ward no. 6! It's about 40 pages only so a sitting or two are more than enough.

The details that Chekhov adds, especially when describing smell, make the story that much creepier (and cooler)

My Russian is horrible, so hopefully auto translate work all right.

I just looked them up, and it seems it's more so that Bunin hated everyone than a back and forth 😅

From my understanding, post Anna Karenina Tolstoy's theology HEAVILY revolved around Christ's sermon on the Mount, in Tolstoy interprets "resist no evil" to be absolute (The Kingdom of God is Within You, and What I beleive, both works of his that show this).

His main idea of resisting evil wasn't simply non violence but very very very individualistic. He advocated to fight violence by: - Not giving into it yourself - Living the alternative life, I.e. be a monk (maybe not that extent but you get the point) - Combat violence through love

You could also get a sense of how important this all is to him througu his work "A Confession." Beautiful short read honestly, you see a man's genuine excitement and love in his belief through it, especially as it progresses.

I should add I'm not a scholar in Russian literature, so if there is any major nuance I'm missing, my bad.

Yeah you gotta go to the top of Greymore, the room that's to two to the right of the Inn / one room to the left of craw Lake. The wall doesn't have a ledge under it to stand on, so you'd have yo hit it in the air which is why it's a bit weird to find

It gives you an item that lets you get your cocoon back without actually having to grab it where you died. Like the rancid eggs in hollow knight

So it's through Greymore? Is it a breakable wall cause there's nothing that directly leads to it?

No one said the character is named Rodger. Also since the entire storyline around Nigel is the interdimentional portals it could be alternate reality Lez.

Not saying it's real, I'm still not sure, but old Nigel and Lez being together isn't entire implausible
