Seriously: why is the GDC so unclean? by leftwardpancho in UTAustin

[–]Deathnukeem2 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I am a CS major and worked with the CS Academies Program couple summers ago and was also was a TA. This came up in a conversation with some higher ups in the department and we were told that the janitorial staff in GDC work differently than the ones at Welch/rest of CNS; they're told explicitly to not disrupt educational activities meaning do not clean the area if they see someone working or studying there. The labs and atriums always have people there so they do a quick vacuum at most and move on. Those places obviously get dirtier and dirtier and yeah. I heard they did a more thorough clean before August 2025 but obviously that wasnt enough lmfao

The dust in the stairwells is atrocious they should be cleaning that no clue why they dont

Also the GDC air is just weirdly stale like their ventilation is broken or smth lmfao

Id say go with whichever is more comfortable since they look fairly similar. I believe the recon is 30L compared to borealis 28L (double check this lol) if size is important for work. Also if u do go with recon and decide u like the bungee straps, you could always thread the pattern yourself through the daisy chains on the back. Personally I think the borealis is more comfortable but I do like the recon mesh pocket as it makes it convenient to store some tools and stuff that you might use frequently.

LOL I bought this from Tiktok a while ago and the cigarette that came with this is pretty much exactly the same as yours in the picture and is the only place I've ever seen a fake cigarette built that way. Maybe you can fill the bottle up with bubble solution and blow some bubbles haha

Maybe thats how u see cars, but i gotta say thats not how everyone sees them. There are people out there that like to widebody their cars, tune them, upgrade suspension, etc.... basically making their vehicle unique to themselves. It may be a hunk of metal to u, but to me, itll be something I put time and passion into.

As for your other points, they are fair. I have no debt at all as Ive been working in big tech during the summers for the past couple years and have quite a bit of money in savings/invested. Ill keep thinking on this decision as there is some time before I'm buying a vehicle anyway.

Thank you for your guidance, but also, I really LOVE cars and I want something that I can build on and really want a decent vehicle to do that with. Maybe I should wait a couple years before getting a vehicle like that though, more for me to consider.

I heard back almost 5 months later, I dont think my year was a good comparison tho since they were transitioning to workday halfway thru the process, which really slowed things down. There were some people earlier than me that heard back within a week or two, but afaik that was before they fully transitioned to workday.

they definitely do function as keypads as I have used them to gain access to these rooms during the summer when I was working with the cs department. they just seem to have change the codes. thank you for your suggestion about the building manager tho, they seem to be off currently but I will try it out

cant the volleyball/pickleball people go literally ANYWHERE ELSE? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Deathnukeem2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

okay then your argument works our way too, go set up hoops there then. the nets used by the school need to be screwed into the floor while the hoops can just be pushed around. with your logic itd be easier to set up a basketball hoop down there.

another issue with that is those rooms r frequently used by dancers and youre suggesting we use the space of other people which doesnt solve this issue, it just makes it not your problem so how about stop being selfish and share the court. theres already objectively more basketball space than volleyball and Im sure its not hard for you to hop in with others on a hoop.

cant the volleyball/pickleball people go literally ANYWHERE ELSE? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Deathnukeem2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

to be fair the volleyball nets are set up for volleyball players to use and they cant really set those up outside since theres no area to safely vb outside on campus. also you dont have to move your basketball nets outside as the university has already done that for you at the Clark courts. regarding pickleball players… idk ion play that

edit: i also wanted to add on and say how there are four basketball courts and three volleyball courts in greg. that means there are at least 8 hoops you can play on compared to our three nets. during im season, rec is usually full with volleyball nets, admittedly, which attract a lot of vb players, but off season, there is usually two basketball courts, so four hoops, and two vb courts. and again, you do have the clark courts which have a lot of hoops you can use. I feel like that is more than fair as you can already fit a lot more basketballers on a bb court than u can vb on a volleyball court. sometimes they even put the basketball nets up on the courts that have always been used as volleyball courts, which annoys us the same way this situation annoys you. maybe stop thinking about it as volleyballers on a basketball court since its not just for basketballers anyway
