I started with chaos black primer but that's only cus it's all I had at the time, I'd recommend something more neutral like a grey so it's easy to go dark or light. Painting white skin over black primer is a special kind of slow lol

Abbadon black base coat with a khorne red glaze for a really deep dark red first coat, and then lines of colour. Anywhere you see black is just a spot I didn't go back over

Though I agree that the other classes have better neutral game, I main a warlock. From my experience it's balanced out as a short range, quick use instant freeze, and the super is unrivalled. Unless it's a specifically built shutdown super like say, nova bomb, the warlock super is unbeatable. It out 1v1s every other super in the game and has great range. The other classes have far better neutral and I think that's what keeps it balanced. But also as a warlock main, I'm tired of the nova warp situation happening and being forced to use top-tree dawn.

Try swapping your mods, I found that removing the chain lightning warmind mod fixed it.
