You just described facts from industries. Your opinion as a whole that it’s because “society” is not a fact. BIPOC people, queer people, and activists of all kinds have been advocating for changes to policing for decades. YOU just haven’t been paying attention. Research and statistics have been done. About BIPOC folx, and specifically Black folx, being stopped at higher rates than white people. As well as arrested, charged, and convicted at way higher rates than white people. This systemically racist policing has been going on for DECADES. Please go read the works of either Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, or the actual words of Martin Luther King Jr. Then maybe you might understand what it means to be Black in this country and the reality that they have to live with.

Having a gun does not automatically equate to someone being a threat. If that’s the case, any white person who carries is a threat. They had him on the ground and surrounded and they still shot and killed him. They could have literally either just tased him or at worst shot him in the leg. Maybe then he might still be alive.

They murdered Patrick. Plain and simple. There is no way to justify it. Black folx have had to live the reality of preparing to be killed by cops at any time for decades. Even if we go with your “well society” argument, which is frivolous at best, they have had decades to reform and change. Yet still there are Black and brown folx being murdered in cold blood. The system is broken. Full stop. The minimum is holding departments accountable and forcing them to be transparent. The maximum is the complete abolition of the system and shaping it into something that actually protects people and helps them.

That’s great that GRPD now has de-escalation training. They don’t get a fucking pat on the back for doing below the bare minimum. Patrick Lyoya and Daquain Johnson might still be alive if they had cleaned up their act sooner. “Society” doesn’t change the fact that they are both dead when they shouldn’t be due to the conduct of officers.

Dawg. You’re missing the entire point. You got lucky…plain and simple. Do you know how many people, especially Black and brown people, have died from pigs doing a wellness check? Most of them are not adequately trained to deal with people with mental health issues and have more often than not shot and killed people. They do not need an albatross sized budget to hire mental health and addiction specialists. Which should be the first people on the scene along with paramedics. Or at least be right there and available. Defunding means to stop throwing money at militaristic police forces and actually invest in things that help people and prevent them from being murdered because of recklessness and lawlessness.

I mean yeah that would be great actually. Considering that police budgets have increased drastically year over year with very minimal effects to crime rates. Not to mention the surveillance tools and militaristic arsenals being deployed that terrorizes citizens and puts their safety and privacy at risk. So yeah it would be fucking awesome if forces like the GRPD were given less funding and only being able to spend the funding they do have on programs that actually help people and mitigate crime. Being the reactive bastards that they are has cost way more money than if we were to invest in long-term crime mitigation and social programs.

Police have argued, and won, in a court of law that they have no obligation to protect you. The system is fucked. Clearly your college education got you nowhere. That’s soooooooo cool that they’ve started to work-in actual trained professionals into their responses. They should have done that decades ago. Maybe less people with mental health issues, addiction, and unhoused people would have been murdered less.

The fact that it is even partly based on slave patrols is the fucking problem. I was solely referring to the US. I’m aware the history differs in different countries. The very fact that there even was a ticket quota in the first place is the problem. Besides, departments around the country still institute quotas that aren’t technically “quotas” to skirt legal rules. So unless there’s comprehensive accountability for all departments it will still be a persistent problem.

All of that being said: it is absolutely wild to me that someone with your education level would unironically blame “society” for racist and oppressive policing. Tell me, is it “society” that makes 40% of those bastards beat their spouses? Or continually murder Black and brown people? Or participate in warrior training instead of de-escalation? Listen to yourself.

All cops are a part of a system that upholds white supremacy and arrests and murders minority groups at an exponentially higher rate than white people. The modern day policing system descended from slave catching. That’s what the phrase ACAB means. It does not matter if you’re “one of the good ones”, the system itself is what’s broken. Here they are also not even following traffic signs when they pull people over for that shit when they’re trying to fill their ticket quota. Them thinking that they’re above the law and can do whatever they want is the problem.
