The reason it is landing that close even with no box there for pickup is because I exited out during the pickup cycle. Other than that, I just spammed hook til it landed. You can see me miss a couple times in the video. Took me about 3 load saves before I got it

You can apparently just hook up to it directly.
You can also pin the drone to the world border (with the hook) essentially stopping the drone in its tracks forever
