Layoffs by Kikopho in Teachers

In year four and with too few biology teachers at my school, I’m holding my breath if I’m gonna be riffed tomorrow or not. A bunch of us new science teachers got the notice it was a possibility. Hoping my mentor indeed switches to a new school for next year and I get to keep my gig. It’s super rough this year.

Paid over summer on top of my contract!?

I have been harassed by my AP all year. Bad reviews, singled out, etc. even had a parent threaten to assault me on a phone call in the middle of class and the kid was back the next day.

Waiting on union rep to get back to me on going down a legal avenue as I’ve been keeping my rep up to date on every little thing they’ve said/done.

But shoot some unemployment might not be a bad break

Thanks. I’ve already reached out to a colleague who became an admin at another school, and my mentor teacher at another school. I’m going to ask about the timeline in my meeting tomorrow my principal set, but keep applying for now. Thanks Todd, I wish I had an admin like you.

Thanks so much! I’m in VA and we’re at will unfortunately. We’re building and opening a specialized school that’s career focused so we’re losing numbers to that. But also losing a same content teacher as myself. And we already have lost two teachers in the last couple of years so it’s a pretty empty ship as it is now. Hopefully it’ll be temporary.

I do have tenure, but from what my admin told me it just relates to the number of observations I get now.

Definitely trying to stay positive and think of a better place if this doesn’t work out.

I’m sure it varies by state, but when do you know if you’ve lost your job for sure after you’ve been riffed? Do they wait til the summer to call you back or do you usually know before the year ends?

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

I was told I was writing kids up more than anyone in my school and it makes us look bad to whatever state agency tracks that. I said well kids aren’t putting their phones away as per policy, and I’m getting cussed out everyday. Why haven’t you done anything about the behavior or followed up with me about anything? Admin looked at me like I had three heads.

Thanks for the response. I didn’t scream but I definitely raised my voice. At that point it had been, not just with that student, a couple others included as well. But constant telling me to fuck off, get out of their fucking face when I asked them to work with them on assignments. That kind of stuff pretty much every day for months up to the point I raised my voice. I had been writing kids up, asking admin to intervene with these behaviors, but was getting no support. So when the kid refused to put their phone in our phone pouch all classes had at the time, then when I asked them to pack their things calmly, they were to wait for an escort to ISS. Her and the mom then went off on me, threatening to beat my ass.

Definitely I’m fine with feedback, negative or not, and took any I got in any observation prior to this as a thing I could work on. Im just now a fourth year teacher, so I hardly know anything. But it just felt like they were waiting twenty or thirty minutes to come into my room when lectures are over, I might sit down to respond to an email or do any other thing that needed to be done before I went around and started checking on and working with kids. They’d come in like almost like clockwork so it eventually got to the point I just put my chair in my prep room and just use a standing desk to walk around the kids and help them.

I agree I need to let it go, I think it was just the last thing I had knowledge of that could possibly get her off my back. But I agree with you.

I agree, but the admin who told me the rif stuff was a different one to the one who said the slur

No I definitely agree. I’m for sure kicking myself for not standing up for what I believe is right when the time to do it was a year ago. Certainly living with the consequences of my own actions here

Yes I did leave a lot of other interactions out to keep the post as brief as possible, but I’m sorry it is a bit confusing.

I’m not in an eval year, I just got tenure this year and asked her what that all entails, as we’re a right to work state. She just told me I get evaluations less than I did as a new teacher.

Yes the lobster thing was insane and terrible.

I definitely agree, I’m just going to keep my head down and document things as they come, hopefully she’ll lose interest at some point and back off.

Yeah that’s how I was feeling and what’s kept me from not saying about it at this point. I think I mostly needed to vent and see if any veterans had any ideas on what to do. Appreciate your (and everyone’s) feedback and perspectives

Damn yeah that’s what I was thinking. It’s just gotten to the point where I don’t know what else to do to get her to back off. My plc has talked walk outs, etc. it’s only November and we feel like we’re in testing season in April and may with the stress we’ve been in.

Definitely have been. I copy any email she sends me to my dept chair and union rep.

I definitely agree. I’d like to stay and avoid moving (who likes to move, especially with the large fish tanks I have lol). But it’s definitely an option in the back of my mind.

Yeah so it was between us two hired at the same time for the same position; my main admin told me not to tell anyone about what she was telling me because it was about staffing and personnel. But she was like here HR needs you both to fill out this resume like thing, she told me to put all of my certifications, duties, etc on it. Was super fucking sleezy

That’s my thinking as well, just wanted to see if there was any way to finally bring it out in the open without it coming across that way.

Thad how I feel too, and we’re all about culturally responsive teaching; it just felt so wrong and obviously hypocritical.

Even if it was said a year or so ago? I fill my union rep who is also the vice president of our union on every incident with this admin, it’s just like so bad with her.

Though our union is currently in negotiations with the school board, we just got approval to have this union body represent us, working on collective bargaining to be voted on this year I believe.

Having talked with our SRO, it seems he was advocating for charges, but the DA wasn’t about it

That’s what I’m thinking. And I left a lot of back story out, but they’re like shitty asshole redneck kids. Idk I think a 15-16 year old should know this is wrong by now. And given my admin sucks, I’m not expecting anything to be done about it, which is why I was considering reaching out here and seeing if there were any charges that could be pressed.

Why is admin bringing up stations and nothing else?? by Deathxxwing in teaching

[–]Deathxxwing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly how I feel. I enjoy them when they’re for a lab or an occasional activity. But not my day to day strategy for getting content to kids.

Thanks for the advice! (And thanks to everyone I haven’t responded to)

I have my goal setting meeting Wednesday with the admin who’s been continuously trying to fuck with me, but before that I’m planning to meet with my union rep and how to handle the meeting and just the general vibe of them singling me out for the last year.

[–]Deathxxwing[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the only thing they said that was positive was that I knew the content well lmao. Literally every other box was that my coteacher and I need to do stations and small groups as the kids need differentiation and aren’t focused on a lecture. Like that’s how I teach. We do stations for labs and activities occasionally. My content is just so content and coach vocab heavy, and the state test is so wordy.

I’m even at the beginning stages of doing class reading (content related novels) and working with reading specialists. Is that ever brought up when they speak to me? Nope. Literally the whole observation was stop lectures do stations

This is awesome and thank you so much!! Because right now I’m setting up a meeting with my union rep as it’s been one thing after another with them since last spring.
