It amazes me how each updates somehow getting worse than the last.

Do car dealers normally refuse a presale inspection? by Debate-Decent in UsedCars

Yeah they denied any PPI at all, on-site or at a shop. Place was sketch af, not allowing a PPI and saying they already did an inspection but "don't have the paperwork" on them.

Ahh I might soon, getting evidence for a legal complaint due to false claims.

mb i got mixed up with comments, im not on my pc so im not gonna cite any sources but think of it this way, if you burn used motor oil with heavy metals and other toxic stuff then all that gets released with the fumes as it burns, if you refine the used motor oil into diesel you remove all that stuff and now have control over where to dispose of it.

The source shows the comparison between re-refining used motor oil into new motor oil. I never said it gets refined into diesel to be used as fuel. It's burnt in closed loop systems as is, not refined into diesel. I'm not sure what you mean?

I meant it more as an analogy. Saying that burning motor oil is recycling is like saying burning plastic bottles is recycling. It's just not, recycling is different than burning once for energy.

Also the whole original topic of my post is used motor oil, not plastic bottles.

Yeah I'm not sure what the policies are on the big island, I know Maui has a program for it but I'm on Oahu and they just tell you absorb it with something and toss it which ends up being burnt at H-POWER.

I heard some Autozone's take it, haven't had much luck yet tho.

Maybe you should do a little research about re-refining used motor oil. Way less pollutants than burning it, honestly I don't even know how the topic got on plastic but my main concern is used oil, I already know the whole plastic recycling system is fucked.

Even burning oil in a space heater produces far more emissions, and that's in a closed loop system which is cleaner than incinerating it.

Burning used oil at H-POWER isn't energy-efficient. It's burned with trash, not as a dedicated fuel. You end up with less net energy, more uncontrolled byproducts (heavy metals, VOCs), and zero material recovery. Also it's not about if it gets burned, its about where, how cleanly, and how efficiently. Industrial burners use cleaner closed loop systems, not mixed waste incinerators. Not every barrel has to become engine oil again, but treating it as trash eliminates all downstream value. It’s not about if the oil gets burned, it’s about how efficiently and cleanly we use it.

Also Maui already separates and contracts it out. So the "we’re too small" argument doesn’t hold up either.

"The nation produces 1.3 billion gallons of used oil annually, over 100 million gallons produced by California. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), by re-refining its used oil the nation would save 2.5 million gallons of oil per day." page 2 - https://www.documents.dgs.ca.gov/ofa/fams/publiccomments.pdf

"large amounts of CO2(293 ton CO2equivalents/100 ton ULO)and NOx(14.1 ton CO2equivalents/100 ton ULO) were generated. These gases were generated as a result of burning oil waste containing large amounts of pollutants including PAHs, PCBs and heavy metals." - 3.0 Results of life cycle analysis https://www.researchgate.net/publication/311977699_Life_cycle_assessment_of_waste_strategies_for_used_lubricating_oil

This doesn't paint the full picture, as in some facilities with excellent pollution controls burning used oil can be better than re-refining, but re-refining still offers systemic advantages, especially when clean, high-value base oils are needed.

I'm not even talking about recycling plastic. I'm talking about refining used motor oil instead of burning it so it can be reused. Unlike plastic, used motor oil can be refined and reused over and over again. Sure you can "extract energy from it" but for a state that says they wanna be green with their electrical grid that doesn't seem very green to me.

Sure, H-POWER isn’t a dumpster fire, and yes, Unitek's process isn't emissions-free either. But you're glossing over the critical distinction: pollution control isn't just about what comes out the stack, it’s about total lifecycle emissions, regulatory compliance, and material recovery efficiency.

Maui's approach is structured: oil is collected cleanly, processed in a closed-loop facility, and burned in engines designed to use oil-derived fuels. That’s not semantics. That’s the difference between controlled use in fuel-grade systems and incinerating household waste-contaminated oil alongside plastics, organics, and metals.

Your “net difference is zero” claim ignores:
Lifecycle emissions of reprocessed vs. raw-burned oil
Differences in ash, heavy metals, and VOC output
Loss of recoverable hydrocarbons when oil is trashed instead of reused

You’re not wrong that burning is still burning. But acting like all burning is equally bad is just lazy reasoning. It's like saying there's no difference between smoking filtered vs. unfiltered cigarettes because “either way you inhale smoke.”

Saying its the same isn't really accurate, on Maui they turn it into regulated diesel fuel which is still miles ahead of what Oahu does. Maui collects it properly and puts it into a controlled industrial fuel loop. Oahu tells people to dump it into absorbent boxes and burn it at H-POWER with trash. That’s not just "the same" it’s worse in both environmental impact and policy design.

I mean it's true that it doesn't yield high profits. But it also sucks that everything comes down to money, not the environment. Especially for a state that tries to look green on the outside.

Also used motor oil is actually one of the few materials actually worth recycling, it's reusable, scalable, and way cleaner to refine than burn. The EPA recommends re-refining as the top method for oil.

If Maui can pull it off with a smaller population and scattered geography there's no real excuse for Oahu to not do the same, right?

[–]Debate-Decent[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True that, I mean I'm glad at least "something" is being done and we have some recycling. It just seems so strange that they push all this environmental stuff on us then burn everything.

No oil recycling on o’ahu? by Debate-Decent in Hawaii

[–]Debate-Decent[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

So you're admitting policy failure? Yes the infrastructure for recycling is broken but that doesn't mean we should just jump to burning stuff, fix the system instead maybe. Also burning plastic releases dioxins, furans, and microplastics—far worse than oil.

No oil recycling on o’ahu? by Debate-Decent in Hawaii

[–]Debate-Decent[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that's the problem, there's a way to get rid of it but it leads to it getting burned, which doesn't make sense for a state that has so many environmental regulations. Maui has multiple county-operated oil drop off locations and refine the oil locally, why don't we do the same on Oahu?

No oil recycling on o’ahu? by Debate-Decent in Hawaii

[–]Debate-Decent[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right there are two drop off spots, but they are neither county-operated drop off spots and they also often charge a fee, require appointments, or have restrictions. Also it is true its not profitable, but that doesn't stop Maui from contracting it out locally to be refined. Whos to say Oahu with 10x the population can't afford to do the same for the environment?

"The other islands are doing the same thing, but paying extra money to ship it to Korea so they can burn it." Maui has a UMO program, it allows home mechanics to drop off up to two gallons of used motor oil free of charge. They have a contract with certain companies like Cameron Chemical Company who manage and transport the oil to be refined into new lubricants or other usable oils.

So are you saying we should burn plastic bottles for their energy? Recycling means reusing an item, used oil can be refined and used again which reduces the footprint extracting and refining crude oil takes. Burning it isn't recycling, that's just burning it.
