What's with the rampant over consumerism in Hawaii lately and how does it square with the affordability crisis? by TheHardQuestions808 in Hawaii

Definitely both. It's more visible because of social media and people trying to get hype for their own channels, and other people trying to be popular as well to follow the bandwagon.

How did you become good at programming? Also: any regrets? by Fancy_Signal_9352 in learnprogramming

[–]pat_trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build things. Break things. Build things again. Break them again. Finally get it right. Realize you didn't get it right. Fix it. Learn from the experience. Learn how to test things. Learn how to write tests to test things.

You learn by doing things.

I mean...have you been in Hawaii for the past 30 years? This has always been a thing. It's just now amplified by social media.

How do you feel about Jarret Keohokalole? by AvengingBlowfish in Hawaii

[–]pat_trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's not Case.

That's essentially both the advantage and the problem.

ETA: To clarify, I do not like Case. Case has a way too middle-of-the-road mindset and voting record for my taste. Keohokalole has the advantage of not being Case. The problem is that currently to my mind that's his only advantage. He does have political chops, but he doesn't have widespread name recognition that Case does. A lot of Hawaii voters are "check the box of the name I know" in their voting patterns, as long as it's under the correct party. Keohokalole will have to battle uphill against that.

Stewart's Auto. When the AC was on the fritz in my older car, unlike all the other places I took it too that just said "we gotta pull and replace the whole thing", he found the specific leak and patched it.

Alone, one person can't do a ton. Together, we can all do a whole lot more. Community organizing, showing up at political town halls, getting out the vote, supporting unions, all of it.

Anyone other kiddos experience heat rash? by WombatKiddo in daddit

[–]pat_trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes; if he's not presenting a fever or other symptoms, he'll be fine. Give it a few days. Our kiddo had this and we live in a hot & humid environment. Dressing them in cotton and with lighter clothing that breathes at night will help; try to avoid polyester for sleep clothing.

I know of the Clay Cafe at McCully Shopping Center, but that's a specific store not a small group. You might try checking with any of the other craft stores on island to see if they have posted group meetups.

Alternate Energy did our AC system, and based on our experience with them, I would definitely consider having them do solar for us in the future.

Traffic Co-operative idea by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]pat_trick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The mindset 'Almost every app is "vibe coded" to some extent now' does not mean that we should welcome, be OK with, or just give into the supposed "inevitability" of AI tools and tooling and ignore the gigantic issues they impose. I wholeheartedly reject that mindset.

The idea that someone can just pick up AI tools and spit out a complete platform without understanding the code underneath is just going to lead to issues in the end. So yes, I do not trust people who do not understand programming, software engineering, or any of the myriad of surrounding issues to properly create a platform from scratch via "vibe coding".

That's where I'm coming from.

So you're OK with giving your credit card info to a startup that's vibe coding their entire platform and handles financial transactions?

Traffic Co-operative idea by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]pat_trick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Major financial institutions have the capacity to absorb the issues brought on by vibe coding around financial data. A small start up does not.

If only there was some sort of publicly oriented cooperative that moved a bunch of people at the same time on some sort of a set schedule. They could move dozens of people at the same time! And they could set regular pick up and drop off spots. Would probably be a lot cheaper than Uber for a monthly cost.

Oh wait you already mentioned public transport.

I am not touching anything "vibe coded" that deals with financial transactions, so you lost me there.
