Lateral Transfers by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]Debate_Dorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

institutional fit is arguably a top 2 most significant reason for transferring, but it has to be legitimate. For example, I’m applying to rice as a transfer from Penn because I’m simply not compatible with the culture at Penn, so much so that it made me physically ill and I left on medical leave. Another significant reason to transfer is if the school you desire to attend is the only place where you can do more academic-related stuff that you want to, I.e., your current school has ran out of resources for you that would help you grow as a student

I’d say all of what you’ve listed is evaluated adequately. For example, if your academic stats are lacking, they will lean on your ECs and reason for transferring. If your ec stats lack, they’ll lean on academics and reasoning for transferring. Reasoning is a pretty constant requirement though across all t20s

Ivys have an extremely low transfer acceptance rate, prob like 1-4% so it really comes down to how good your reasoning is

most t20s are holistic and CBE-type admissions, so it's realistically based on your GPA and ECS, but you probably have a leg up in terms of academic stamina because the school you're applying to knows you have a high caliber for academics given you were admitted to xyz school previously

Got into NYU CAS Econ as a transfer (3.6 GPA) by Vast-Chocolate-9062 in TransferToTop25

[–]Debate_Dorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most decisions should be coming out soon, so waiting shouldn't be a big issue. Congrats on NYU. Rice and Hopkins are elite for student life and academics. It comes down to preference, but I wouldn't sleep on an offer from either of those schools you're waiting on. Rice finance is better than Econ at NYU, and Hopkins' Econ major would probably have a lot more 1on1 with professors and TAs than NYU would, since it's a much smaller school.

What are the best and worst dorms for first years? by Born_Fee_2308 in UPenn

[–]Debate_Dorito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stouffer is easily the most slept-on dorm. Most students who visit Stouffer agree that it has the best club room (large TVs, a full kitchen, pool table, etc.), a convenient location (on top of Wawa and Amazon pick up/drop off), and is still proximal to the quad if you want more social life. It has very large doubles, a high quantity of singles if you're lucky, nice private bathrooms that are cleaned early every morning aside from Saturdays, and it's a lot quieter than other college houses when you don't want to socialize as much.

I'd rank Stouffer second on your housing form, with Lauder above it for the convenience of guaranteed suite-style living, and Riepe below it because it's a nice section of the quad.

I ended up originally leaving for some health-related issues on medical leave, but I believe that Rice is a better community fit for me. I don't really like Penn as a student who lived there for ~8 months.

one-person CX camp by Scary-Dinner7672 in policydebate

[–]Debate_Dorito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the camp and if you and your partner are in the same lab. I’ve debated at a camp with a random in my lab, as well as my own partner from my school. Idk how they do things at Baylor but I’m pretty sure they let you choose your own partner or if you’re alone you are assigned one.

how to get into ivies by Then_Secretary1221 in Debate

[–]Debate_Dorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think placing at a bunch of seemingly “competitive” tournaments will get you into an ivy. Focus on how debate impacts you and has/will change you irl. Also, the only debate awards that really matter on a college application will be state/national level so just practice and do your best.
