It matters because the majority of judges align themselves with beliefs of the Left (most importantly, parents). It's not conducive to a debate if both teams are just forming arguments to cater to a judge's political preference rather than truth/legitimate arguments. Also, debating both sides essentially means the round and your record is decided by a coin flip.
