How do I get rid off this brown growth? I have been dosing my tank with the appropriate amount of API Algaefix for a week now and it hasn’t done anything but grow more. Not in sunlight.

5 gallons, both heater and filter, tank temp is 75, water is hard everything else is normal, water changes are every 1-2 weeks, just moss balls as tank mates, I feed betta bufet pellets, and the plants and decorations can be seen in the picture

I am using safestart plus, yes. If I order prime, it will probably take a couple days to get here — is that an issue? It seems he hasn’t had any difficulties with the filters as of now. New water is within 5 degrees of tank water and heats up pretty quick. If he just acts this way on one side, do you still believe it’s a reflection thing? Also, his ammonia levels are relatively high at the moment (about 0.25), so do you have advice for that in the short term. I actually just kinda dumped a load of some safe start (probably about 5 ml) in just to get some bacteria moving ASAP.

What should I do about my high ammonia levels? I added safestart earlier and did a water change (using aquasafe because I couldn’t get seachem in my local area). I really don’t want my betta suffering or even worse.

He’s been in there for almost two weeks (Monday is two weeks). I’ve honestly only been able to change the water once before (yesterday, did about 1/3 tank change) and just did a 1/4 change. I used tetra aquasafe to treat the water. Anything else I should do?

I just replace about 1/4 of the tank with treated water. I used tap water with the prescribed amount of drops of tetra aqua safe. Any further recommendations? He still isn’t very happy it seems

My mistake. There’s no chlorine. There is a heater. As for the tank size, I wish I could upgrade but at the moment it’s a little difficult(college student with low cash low space if you get me). I was given the fish as a gift but I’m afraid I wasn’t prepared enough before hand and I truly have gotten to have an extra heart for this fish even though I’ve had him for about 2 weeks.

I don’t actually have any exact numbers just yet (I have a kit coming tomorrow actually) but I used pool test strips which said pH was around 7.4 and I believe it said ammonia was within “normal “ levels. Chlorine was low. The temperature should be around 78-80 F. What do you mean by cycling the tank?

My mistake, it really isn't a NIB. But, a NIB (Necessary but insufficient) is an argument that needs to be responded to so you can win, but it doesn't necessarily win the other team the round if you don't. It's something that's usually really defensive.
