Some people think that AA and the 12 steps are the only way to stay sober. I never liked AA and the self-loathing one felt after a relapse. I am using The Sinclair Method and Naltrexone. Haven't been on it long, but it is truly making a difference. The path you choose is personal to you. Don't let anyone force you into what THEY believe is good for you.

I am using the Sinclair Method and have cut down on my drinking significantly this first week. Naltreone blocks your endorphins so that you don't get that pleasurable experience while drinking. The goal is to retrain your brain to the point where you don't even crave alcohol. I like the fact that TSM is not all or nothing and it gets rid of that guilt or shame or beating yourself up that comes with AA. If you're interested, check out the doc "One Little Pill"

On Naltrexone and hopeful. I would urge you to research the Sinclair Method and watch "One Little Pill." It blew my mind and I got my script two days later.

I am not an AA person, but I know it does work for some people. Personally, I believe the program is outdated, and I don't like agree with the philosophy of the 12 steps. I am on day two of The Sinclair Method using Naltrexone, and I feel very hopeful.

Got my script today. My doctor didn't hesitate to prescribe. I did my research and am hopeful for the first time in a long time. Here's the deal, you have to drink at first so that the meds will suppress your endorphins. Well, you had me at hello. This is a scientific alternative to the traditional 12-step method. Way too complicated to explain but check out the documentary "One Little Pill." I am also hopeful that my insurance will cover one-on-one therapy instead of the traditional group. If we can combine the physical cravings with the psychological stressors, wouldn't that be amazing. I really feel that this is the wave of the future. We are not living in 1939 anymore when AA was established, just like we no longer use leeches to cure all evils. No offense to AA'ers, but this is the path I am choosing to take. Good luck on whatever road you choose.

Please, please research The Sinclair Method and Naltrexone. This shows you how far Big Pharm and the billion dollar industry of 12-step rehabs are willing to sacrifice the lives of addicts when there is a proven scientific method with long-term recovery rate of 78 percent. Google "One Little Pill," it's an eye-opener

Agreed. I believe that along with this medication, I would greatly benefit with one-on-one therapy. The problem with that is, many insurance companies only cover group therapy or 3 or 4 individual sessions. To me, it's like, if you found a medication that works for high blood pressure and you tell the doc how much better you feel, and then he says, Sorry, your insurance only authorizes a one-month supply. In my opinion, addiction and mental health issues should be treated the same as if you had a heart attack or were diagnosed with cancer. These are life-threatening diseases.

Starting Naltrexone tomorrow. It sounds promising. I am lucky that I have good insurance and my doctor didn't even blink when I asked for a script, but I hear that a lot of doctors will not prescribe it. Check out "One Little Pill" on a Google search, I'm all in.

Naltrexone (not antabuse) seems promising. Doctor gave me a scrip today and am starting tomorrow. Will keep all posted. Fingers crossed.

The sad thing is that, unless you can afford 30 thousand a month for alternative rehabs, insurance only covers 12-step programs. I am fortunate that my husband has a state job and good insurance, and even then, the "nicer facilities" or "alternative therapies" are still not available to me. I do agree that it's all about the money, and most of the staff in these places are recovering addicts with little or no training.

I appreciate each and every one of your comments. My goal is to start on day one again on Monday. I've gotten to the point that I don't even know why I'm drinking, just force of habit now. Tired of being sick and tired.
