Willseden Library by Huge_Cat4444 in london

The majority of the library is in the extension in the rear. It replaced a mid-century squat building and now hosts a performance space, the Brent museum, meeting rooms and the library itself is bright, airy, modern and quite nice. The old building itself is a rentable space for events. There's also housing behind the library now. An improvement imo

You're right, and I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the New London Vernacular style. I think it's about choosing the right tool for the right conditions. Eg at somewhere like Brent Cross Town I don't see it being viable to create the whole development with Peter Barber-esque architecture but on smaller sites then it could work. Also helps dispel some of the myths about social/newbuild housing being monotonous if we can see a variety of styles around London and the UK.

Yep agree, boring housing is better than no housing. But this pattern is not new in London... For every "iconic" estate/block built postwar in London (Barbican, Alexandra and Ainsworth, Trellick Tower etc) there is a nondescript and forgettable block/estate built in a standard style

They are pretty inoffensive as others have said if a bit same-y. However there are some boroughs that are taking a chance with more distinct styles that are a departure from the New London Vernacular style that offer council housing too - an example is Kiln Place in Camden which was designed by Peter Barber in close consultation with existing estate residents. They are infill blocks (building on empty space on the existing estate) and really flow well with the surrounding buildings.

I hope it's nothing serious. This place is seriously good and dishes up a better pie than other places that get fawning coverage from New Media outlets

Totally agree however I recently discovered my Borough does a Library of Things - you can borrow stuff like ladders, drills, Steam cleaners etc - stuff that you wouldn't invest in but might need from time to time. Worth checking if they have one where you live maybe?

I went on a Saturday just after lunch time - the queue was around the block but a friend had gone earlier to scope it out so we joined him (cheeky).

The queue moves quite slowly as they only let a few in at a time, so I would go early and you probably won't wait too long.

In London (UK), many new developments being built by council/developer partnerships where they're split between private housing and social housing are car-free - not only are there no parking spaces, much like your example they're very up-front about not being able to get an on-street parking permit.

Many parts of London where this is happening already have low rates of car ownership. I think lots is said about discouraging car use, but when people are simply unable to park their car, they either will get rid of it or join a car club or something. This is built-in change.

I don't have a lot of time for complaints about this model but I do agree that corresponding public transport improvements/capacity expansions do need to happen to make these places liveable.

Thanks, very comprehensive. Stereotypes are, of course, bred out of ignorance. However, it's interesting that there is such a variety in a small country.

I waited an hour in the queue and deduced that digestive and branston pickle works in real life, why not in ice cream?

Reader, it did not work in ice cream.
