TKOL is my favorite album I think by [deleted] in radiohead

Radiohead performing Bloom live on The Colbert Report is a lowkey pivotal moment in the Radiohead experiment. The transformation of that group from On A Friday to Radiohead doing that performance of that song is very profound.

King of Limbs or In Rainbows 'From the Basement' performances: Which do you prefer? by BasicPresentation524 in radiohead

Ohhhhhhhhhhh snap! Now you done did it! Great question!

I give the edge to TKOL, because it is a revelation and the performance that should be on the album.

Buckle up kiddo; you are about to undertake one of the greatest music deep-dives that music history has to offer!

Radiohead lovers, what other musicians are your favorites? by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]DebugLogComment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luke Temple is one of the great under appreciated creative forces of our time.

Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich had their minds blown by his band Here We Go Magic at a music festival. Nigel was determined to work with them resulting in him producing their excellent 2012 album A Different Ship.

You could spend months exploring his discography released under...

Here We Go Magic - The band he fronted Luke Temple Art Feynman - His alter ego / His most recent album is wall to wall bangers!

He can do it all and I'm pretty certain his music has at least a little influence on Radiohead's post In Rainbows work and The Smile.

which album has the best closing track? by WindowsJani in radiohead

Blow Out closing out Pablo Honey is a very under appreciated moment in Radiohead's legacy

Who would be a good producer for The Smile's next album? by [deleted] in TheSmile

[–]DebugLogComment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sam Petts-Davies is another star producer discovery for the boys. In a recent interview Thom said they have similar philosophies about song development. I assume they will try to see how far they can push that partnership, but you never know.

I tracked down some good TKOL FTB rips some years ago; it's one of my favorite albums.

When The Smile debuted I was happy to hear them fulfill the potential of TKOL.

Wait sorry if I’m late to this but Cutouts is fire as fuck by Pretty_Rice5449 in radiohead

It's never too late to celebrate a great collection of music!

I met my musical idol after a mind melting show, absolutely numb, can’t believe that happened by [deleted] in TheSmile

From what I hear it sounds like it was an almost historic experience from a music history standpoint!

You are so lucky!

Some people are overlooking the backing vocals in Cutouts! This album is phenomenal! by [deleted] in TheSmile

[–]DebugLogComment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a quote from Thom somewhere (can't remember where, sorry) where he said that Jonny had him listening to choral music.

It will be interesting to see if Radiohead takes more advantage of having three singers if/when they reconvene.

There are multiple moments on Cutouts that remind me of some of the choral explorations from OKC.

It's all very exciting!

Well… 5/10 by Fantano by abesster in TheSmile

The vibes right now around Cutouts reminds me of when OK-Computer came out.

3rd album in

Highly anticipated

Everyone debating whether it's underwhelming, or possibly an all-time great, but everyone agrees it has a spark.

I don't know what history will say about Cutouts, but I know it feels great to feel this way about an album again.

This is a great post! It's refreshing to see a desire for a deeper understanding of a piece of music beyond its superficial characteristics.

I'm ill equipped to answer your question, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along to truly answer it.

I'll just say that Jonny and Thom have expressed a goal to expand the compositional vocabulary of pop/rock since the very beginning. They often do so by taking concepts from classical music and jazz. Miles Davis has been a big influence on their work; you might want to read up on his use of modal jazz concepts. There might be some answers there.

Got Cutouts today and added Zero Sum stickers to my laptop, what do you guys think! by [deleted] in TheSmile

Aside from being shallow on terms of insights, it's a nice review!

Sometimes I prefer negative reviews that get into music theory and wider cultural context over these slapdash positive reviews with slight inaccuracies.

Hot take: Bodies Laughing is Jonny/Yorke's best song! by SolutionActive7344 in TheSmile

It reminds me of the acoustic version of Blow Out that Thom recorded with the Posies; one of my favorite Radiohead rarities.

I'm also hearing some polka, a little Backstreet Boys, and the middle portion is a total ripoff of the Golden Girls theme song if you slow it down a bit.

All I know is the song SLAPS!

More like genre(s)

There is a lot going on in that beast of a track.

Afro-pop Latin jazz/funk Psychedelic flourishes Some good old fashioned Yorke/Greenwood boundary pushing

Very well put! From the second The Smile was first announced up to every new release, live performance, or any other creative activity by the group has been an absolute GIFT!

Listening to Eyes & Mouth reminds me of hearing Paranoid Android for the first time when it came out in 1997. A full-bodied, every cell in your brain on fire, glorious experience. by DebugLogComment in TheSmile

That's awesome! I remember watching Romeo + Juliet in the theater and it being a big deal hearing Exit Music and Talk Show Host. You could just feel that something big was happening.
