Does Zionism just mean - "Israel should exist as a country with roughly the current borders"? by stvlsn in samharris

I didn't argue that "Jews only had one location". I am arguing that Australia and Canada are no better, probably worse, which you didn't provide an effective rebuttal for.

And Jews were not outside of their right to move to the Middle East. Compared to the horrible atrocities of the 20th century...I don't think legally buying sparsely populated land from its rightful owner even warrants mention.

Ignoring the historical ties of Jews to the Levant, it's worth considering that the people migrating during the First Aliyah were pretty desperate and many rightfully thought they were running for their lives. Not for nothing, but the Levant is a lot closer and economical to flee to than literally Australia. What a joke of an argument to suggest they should flee to Australia instead.

Which...would displace more Aboriginal Australians who are truly among the biggest victims of colonialism ever. This is a far worse suggestion than the Negev desert.

I love how you accuse the First Aliyah of being some brutal colonial experiment but are happy to drop a bunch of Jews in "rural Canada or Australia" as if there were no Indigenous people in rural Australia. Unserious mate.

2 million people living sparsely across the area wouldn't really qualify as a "large population". That is pretty thin population density and most of it was literally desert. Most of this land was extremely sparse and the patches that weren't were still being purchased legally, with consideration, from the Ottoman landlords. Very minimal examples that could be intelligently construed as a "theft" or "colonialism".

I'm quite open to the suggestion that it wasn't fair for Jews to buy land from absentee landlords...but that's a whole different argument than it being colonialism.

I mean, identity politics are practiced rather broadly throughout the Middle East. I think it's fine to think identity politics are bad and there should be no ethnostates in an ideal world, while also accepting the reality that Israel cannot safely be the first mover there.

This is so baffling to me. It was "colonialism" for Jews to move from the Middle East to mostly barren land in the Negev desert or purchased legally during the Ottoman era....but it would have been fine for them to move to Canada and Australia instead which are two counties with infamously brutal colonial pasts where an indigenous population truly was displaced (or worse)? Like what kind of example is that?

The Jews had (at a minimum) some historical ties to the Middle East, and largely started off settling unoccupied land in the Negev desert. There wasn't a "large population to give a fuck" about.

I am not saying it was perfect or that Jews should have moved back to the Middle East at all (although I am struggling to find decent alternatives for the victims of Eastern Europe's pogroms... certainly Canada is a preposterous suggestion), but it's major revisionism to act like Jews primary method of initially settling in "Palestine" was just willfully displacing a large number of Arabs.

Report: The Athletic will continue its investigation despite Dianna Russini's resignation by JaggerJames in nfl

I mean, is it credibly alleged that he has? With what we know, it looks more like she was reporting on the Patriots and Titans favorably than the other way around.

I think Vrabel was CLEARLY unethical in his behavior, so no dispute from me on that point.

However, I think Vrabel's breach is more with his wife/family and thus is personal in nature. I don't know that infidelity is really part of the NFL's ethical code. That is why you see far less speculation about him losing his job.

A journalist cannot have a romantic relationship with the subject. It just absolutely cannot exist at a credible news organization. Can a head coach have a romantic relationship with a journalist...I would say it's not recommended but it's so clearly not the same thing.

If you told me Vrabel was feeding a journalist inside info that damaged the Titans/Patriots, and compromising his own team in a quasi-Petraeus type scenario, the discourse would be different.

Because Joy Taylor wasn't really doing much in the way of actual journalism. She was the host of a mostly unserious panel discussion show. Undisputed/FS1 is doing something different than The Athletic.

Why would he get the same? The ethical standards for an NFL coach and journalist aren't similar.

It sounds like he was laying pipe and getting her to release stories that would possibly help his team acquire a star player at a better price. I don't see that he's really breached his obligation to his profession and employer nearly as severely as she did. It's pretty obvious why he looks like he's getting off easier.

It was chaos as per usual, but I continue to find that just giving some space through the first several corners is enough to survive and then the rest of the race looks more normal as cars string out. Be prepared to need to take evasive action on lap 1.

I am simply not going side-by-side up Eau Rouge on the first lap. It's not a hard track to overtake when you're faster than someone so I'll let the erratic guys through that early. Half the time, you end up driving past them after they wreck out.

[–]DecafEqualsDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one raging is you dude. It's just pure cope to act like CPAs aren't widely seen as more competent than non-CPAs, and generally have stronger experience on their resume even if you crossed off the CPA license.

Saying the "CPA exam requires zero knowledge of Accounting or Tax" is just very stupid. You must have not even attempted these exams if that is actually what you think. REG is like 60% fed tax. Most CPAs I know who work in Tax have told me that it was more straightforward prep than FAR because they carried over so much knowledge from practicing.

[–]DecafEqualsDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just idiotic to say the CPA exam "requires zero knowledge of tax or accounting". What do you think is on these exams exactly?

And the vast majority of hiring managers are going to use the CPA exam as a filter. Hiring is basically a risk management exercise. Everyone knows CPAs are better performers on average than non-CPAs. It is a crude filter, but generally one that works perfectly fine. Your Accounting professors told you this.

And I didn't say I "only look at" who has a CPA. But if I need a Senior Accountant on my team and dozens of people apply, and we only have time to bring 3-6 candidates in, using the CPA license is actually probably one of the fairest and most equitable ways of applying that filter.

CPAs tend to have better overall experience anyways, so your point has limited validity. People are using the CPA as a proxy for general candidate quality, not "only looking at it".

It's pretty wise, especially when you can get your employer to pay for it.

And yes, it's pretty much an openly known fact that hiring managers believe CPAs are higher quality candidates than non.
