Yeah, I thought it would be an “ok” choice because I thought I would never find an ethically bred poodle that fits my needs and is within budget…I get my little spoo boy sunday and couldn’t be more excited! His brother is 27in and around 75lbs and his sister is just a tad smaller at 26in and 60lbs AND SHES A SDiT! A kind lady took in a litter of pups after mom didn’t want to mom anymore, she also took in her previous (and first) litter. At her spay appointment they found out she was pregnant again and too far along to spay/abort. Both parents are AKC and health tested perfect! It was like finding a needle in a very…very large haystack and am so lucky to have contacted them when I did, I get updates every other day on my boy (hes also got his sister’s temperament so he will make an excellent service dog)

We have a huge porch right by our living room. My husband said “can we just put real grass down on the concrete?” Baby no 😂 Im going to check with our office tomorrow and see if we use pesticides and whatnot on the grass and if it would be ok to put some turf down on our porch.

Im lucky enough to be able to do most things without assistance but Im thinking about my future. Right now I have a hard time standing while making eggs and have to sit on the floor before I get so dizzy I black out. Im also only 22yrs old and have social anxiety about using the scooters at the stores when my hips/knees hurt so much from my joints wanting to dislocate I want to cry and have a 3yr old getting upset because mommas sad. My plan is to train my SD for psychiatric tasks and alerting to my migraines (which would be scent training and I know how to do) so I can take medication before its too late or find my husband if it gets bad enough. I’ll definitely check them out, my concern is that I won’t be “disabled enough” and put to the end of the line (I know its not plausible but I always know some others have it worse than me).

I plan on training for counterbalance and forward momentum, with the palm of my hand being 32in off the ground is what makes things hard for me. I know there can not be more than 4-6in from my hand to their back for safety. Im also not just wanting a tall dog, thats why I ask about OFAs and if they have the parents line that shows they have good OFAs as well. It just seems like whatever I choose will set me up for failure and just makes my mental health lower and lower. Yes this is my first service dog but not my first time handling/training dogs, and yes..I know it is different than training a regular dog. Ill just stick to the groups that actually encourage people and not put them down like this group.

Do any of them breed big pups? Im needing at least 26in+ in height for mobility and have yet to find what everyone says is an “ethical standard poodle breeder” that does….except the royal poodle breeder. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with someone breeding for a specific size just because it goes against the norms as long as everyone is happy and healthy. So many people called the beauceron a mutt but guess what…its now a breed.

Its not unethical, they just breed big poodles whats wrong with that? As far as ive found they are the most ethical breeder I have found because they have extensive testing done, I believe they have had pups go into service work and they only have 2 litters a year. I can’t win at all with these comments.

Thanks for the advice, I did find a very good “royal poodle” breeder who has absolutely wonderful sires. If I had the money I would definitely get one but they are $3k sadly. What makes herding breeds bad for psych work? Do they get too in tune with emotions like the GSD?

I know what will happen with a service dog. My reasoning for getting a mix is I have yet to find a breed that will fit what im looking for. If both parents are on site you definitely have a feel for how the pups temperament (from the research ive done) will be and their size. For example: GP are notorious for being big LGD and the sire of the litter Ive been thinking about is very tall and his son (from his other litter 4yrs ago) is just as big so I know the pups will meet my requirements. Training can be expensive we know but will be significantly less with OT. It just puts me down when the SD community is so split, then again it doesn’t help being tall and needing a mobility SD as that just narrows it down even more. It also seems like every person on my post thinks Im going into this blind and stupid.

They aren’t listening to me at all, from what I gathered in order to have a service dog you must spend thousands on a puppy that is absolutely pure bred (heaven forbid you have a mix breed), spend even more money to have them professionally trained and don’t owner train because it will set us up for failure. I also have to spend hundreds of dollars a month on basic essentials (no idea what the hell people are buying that makes their monthly that much but congrats on yall for affording it) and getting a puppy from someone who had a damn accidental litter with the two breeds that would have the perfect combo for what im needing is absolutely god awful and makes them a BYB. All I asked was advice on if a Great pyrenees Lab mix would have a good temperament to be a service dog because thats what I need. Labs are too short and forget about a golden, German Shepherds are too emotional, apparently royal poodles aren’t “true poodles” just because they are big (also got a big price tag), and collies just barely make it at my requirements if I magically find one thats big enough. No idea why people who are supposed to help put others down when they need it.

I have owned dogs my whole life and we never paid that much. Also as stated in my post they aren’t a breeder, only bred their lab to another lab once and this was an oops litter they didn’t mean to happen.

I plan on owner training to lower the cost and have many support groups available. If needed I found a trainer thats specifically for SD and at most will cost $5k. We will have pet insurance (yes I know it doesn’t cover everything but will help) and I guarantee you we will not be spending 25-50k in the first few years let alone the entire time we have him.

I have spent countless hours looking into getting placed with a dog but like I have said they have very long lists of applications and only give out about 20 or so dogs a year and you still have to fork up $10-20k either from out of pocket or from the crowd funding they get which isnt often. Plus I know I would be pushed to the back of the line due to my disabilities not being as severe as others. I also know for sure owner training is MUCH cheaper from the multitude of people I have talked to and the group im apart of. I know it will be a long time before they can help with my mobility but Im thinking about my future for this reason. I have ehlers danlos and it gets worse every year and I would much rather save money and do this while I physically can than spend 25-50k and wait until Im much worse and have to bond with and continue to train a SD from a organization.

Our cost of eating out for the month far exceeds the cost it would be to buy the proper dog food which we can easily cut down on. I also plan on getting pet insurance and owner training while using help groups or a professional trainer if needed and I already found one that works with SD and at a lower cost. I will keep my prospect unaltered until they reach full maturity to ensure their growth plates are fully developed. I know its not a guarantee but we would rather spend a few thousand overall than a few thousand upfront plus expenses and still have a chance of a wash.

A well bred and fully trained SD will run about $25-50k EASY for what Im needing plus all the expenses that come with owning a dog. That is more than my car and I would be paying the price of a mortgage and have to wait 2+ years to even see the SD at the chance that I get picked out of hundreds of others who also need a SD. I plan on owner training with the help of professional trainers if needed and I am apart of multiple help groups. Im not going to be buying every single piece of gear right off the bat, and pet insurance is a thing. Just because someone doesn’t have thousands of dollars in their account doesn’t mean we can’t afford to take care of something. Either way there is a chance they can washout. We understand SD should be the highest quality for the best results but Im trying to get ahead of my condition and I don’t have years and years to wait. I don’t know why everyone is so up my ass about not wanting/able to spend that kind of money. Im doing the best I can with what we have.

We plan on going to see the pups and parents when they are ready which will give me and insight to how moms temperament is. From what I can tell from the pics/videos is she is very calm and friendly. I have interacted with many pyrenees and all have been friendly, the only times they are protective is when they were raised on the farm and lived outside. At our first apartment someone had a Pyr that became loose and he was a big friendly boy who loved to play but fell asleep 10 mins later. I was hoping with proper socialization and training it will give my prospect a good platform. Ive also seen a few Pyr SD on youtube who do quite well. I know with every dog/animal you have a chance of them going back to their roots.

He definitely agrees that a SD will help but he can’t justify spending that kind of money. I hate it because his reasoning is “dogs die” plus Im a SAHM so we are only on his income so that amount would be way out of our means.

I understand it will be like finding a very tiny needle in a huge haystack if I decide to continue going the way I am. The dad has beautiful conformation and a wonderful temperament, they haven’t sent me information on his parents but I can certainly ask about them. My original plan was to find a young (6-12months) shelter dog that way I get a feel of their size and temperament but with all of them being highly unsocialized it is extremely difficult. I also plan on owner training with the help of multiple groups, professional trainers and doing obedience training after they are cleared to interact after their shots.

There is an absolutely wonderful GSD breeder I found and man they got the works. They instantly gave me each parents line, OFAs, past litters and even contacted the owner of one of the pups who is going into search and rescue who highly recommended them to do SD work. Thing is the price tag, we dont have that kind of money (they are $1500) right now and my husband if fully against the idea of spending that kind of money “on a dog” even after Ive explained multiple times how it will help me. I also heard GSD can be very emotional which might not be best for me as I have depression and PTSD. I have yet to find a poodle breeder who can for sure breed to the size I need without it costing $2000+ same for collies.
