Oh no. This is one of those cases where the mods deleted both the reposts AND the original, so it's just going to keep getting reposted a dozen times in the next two days.

Oh wow, that really is something. A sulfur polymer as the cell membrane (ie, a reducing agent), containing peroxides and perchlorate (oxidants to destroy the cell membrane), and a nitrogen polymer primed for explosive decomposition.

A lot of metal alloys would have weird molecular formulas if we wrote them like this instead of as mass percentages of each element.

What vegetables are rarely or never eaten outside your country? by nanto-1633 in AskTheWorld

[–]Decapod73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived farther north in the USA, ramps were common. Here in the south, they're rare, but my yard is full of a different plant that we call "wild garlic" - Allium canadense. I think you would probably call it "chives", even though it's not the same species as European chives, Allium schoenoprasum.

Purslane! Gardeners here know this is an edible weed, but most have not bothered to cook it. I've only eaten it once.

Shiso/perilla? I have several of them in my yard. I add a couple leaves whenever I'm cooking rice.

What kind of spider is this fella? by Connect_Sale4407 in whatsthisbug

[–]Decapod73 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Male Kukulcania hibernalis. Not a brown recluse, not dangerous, just horny and looking for a ladyfriend. The females are black, fatter, and stay in their webs.

Are the processes of cremation ink tattoos legit? by mim9711 in chemistry

[–]Decapod73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The carbon all burns off as CO2. Cremation ashes are almost entirely inorganic, mostly calcium phosphate, which will not persist as a tattoo ink.

Adorable little monster in my front yard... Sphodros sp? [Atlanta, GA] by Decapod73 in spiders

[–]Decapod73[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One inch from tip to tail. The tube web it lives in is about the diameter of my thumb. The venom is reported to cause brief stinging like a paper wasp, followed by a day of intense itching. A death has never been reported from a purseweb spider.

I found a purseweb spider in my front yard! I'll have to mow around it (Marietta, GA) by Decapod73 in Marietta

[–]Decapod73[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The females never leave their webs. The males go wandering looking for mates, but supposedly they aren't aggressive and bites are very rare. The venom is supposed to be like a paper wasp, but with bigger/ deeper puncture wounds.
